Police have charged a man in connection with road traffic offences following a three-vehicle crash on the Edinburgh City Bypass this morning, Wednesday 8 October 2025. The crash took place on the eastbound carriageway between Baberton and Dreghorn shortly after 7am. Two people were taken to hospital following the collision and other drivers suffered long delays. Tailbacks were reported to have cleared by around 11am.

Police in West Lothian are appealing for information following significant damage to a power pillar in Livingston. Around 12.20pm on Tuesday, 16 September, 2025, officers received a report of a large vehicle having struck the pillar on Almondvale Avenue, then having left the scene without reporting the incident. It is unclear at this time when the collision actually happened. It is estimated the damage is around £10,000 to repair.

An Airbnb operator refused permission to keep renting out his Musselburgh short term let flat has appealed to Scottish Ministers after claiming council officers took too long to tell him of the decision. Alan Montgomery was refused a Certificate of Lawfulness to operate the top floor flat on Edinburgh Road last year and then after planners refused permission for a change of use, his appeal to East Lothian Council’s Local Review Body was also rejected.

Parents in a rapidly expanding West Lothian village are angry that a high school they say was promised will not now be built. Instead, children living in the huge Calderwood development in East Calder will go to existing high schools. The council’s education policy development and scrutiny panel (PDSP) heard that a new school in the village would cost around £90m.

West Lothian’s SNP group expressed “deep disappointment” after their motion of no confidence in the council administration was defeated. It came as no surprise, and the special meeting was dismissed across the chamber, and among councillors – including some SNP members- in Livingston’s Civic Centre as a “waste of time.” The West Lothian Council depute opposition group leader; Councillor Pauline Stafford came in for direct criticism with claims the meeting had been set up as a pre-election stunt ahead of next May’s Holyrood poll.  

Nine Hibs players will be on international duty over the October international break. Grant Hanley & Kieron Bowie – Scotland Both Grant Hanley and Kieron Bowie have kept their places in Steve Clarke’s Scotland squad for their upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Hanley has 63 international caps to date, including keeping a valuable clean sheet against Denmark last month, whilst Bowie will be hoping to add to the solo cap which he picked up in June against Liechtenstein.

Parking meters will be installed across an East Lothian town’s conservation area despite claims it is being done without the support of the community. East Lothian councillors yesterday approved 27 parking meters in North Berwick’s town centre. However their decision was described by local ward councillor Jeremy Findlay as ‘disappointing’ while objectors said the move was ‘nonsense’ and ‘bizarre’. Councillors were presented with the proposals in 12 separate planning applications, which were recommended for approval by officers at the planning committee.

Fifteen people have been charged with more than 60 retail offences within West Lothian during September. This weekend, Sergeant Lee Brodie and PCs Bob Montague, Scott McCullough, and Liam Arbuthnott played a vital role in addressing shoplifting in the Livingston area. While on foot patrol within Livingston Shopping Centre, the officers received reports of thefts from various stores in the area.

Neil Hannon is returning to Edinburgh with The Divine Comedy and has just released a new album Rainy Sunday Afternoons  Neil Hannon returns with The Divine Comedy and his first new album since the top five record Office Politics back in 2019. Since then, Hannon wrote the soundtrack for the musical blockbuster Wonka (2023) and last month released a new Divine Comedy long-player, Rainy Sunday Afternoon, which also hit top five album sales.

Hibs youngsters begin their UEFA Youth League journey at Easter Road later this month. Darren McGregor’s title-winning side will host Kosovan outfit FC 2 Korriku on Wednesday 22 October; kick-off 7:45pm.  The draw was conducted in September, with both Hibs and Korriku entering the Domestic Champions Path Second Round phase of the competition – with Hibs qualifying for Europe’s elite youth tournament after winning the 2024/25 CAS Elite Youth League last season.

Top seed Jacob Fearnley, from Edinburgh, came from a set down to defeat Frenchman Luc van Assche 3-6, 6-2. 6-3 and advance to the second round of the Roanne Challenger tennis tournament in France. The 24-year-old Scot will now face Swiss qualifier Dominic Stricker in round two this evening (Wednesday). This was a notable win for Fearnley against the former French Open junior champion given he has been out of action for more than six weeks and whose form beforehand had been rather chequered.

Edinburgh writers have the chance to win £200 by sharing the city's fascinating history in the William Anderson Memorial Prize 2025. The competition invites the city's residents to submit original non-fiction essays of up to 2,000 words about Edinburgh's history and heritage. Entries must connect to one or more themes from the recent Edinburgh 900 project, celebrating the city's remarkable 900-year story.

Improvements happening in South Queensferry The council is planning improvements on South Queensferry High Street and work is now underway. The first phase of work will take place along the stretch from Seals Craig to Hawes Car Park and will run for 8-10 weeks. This will focus on re-surfacing and pavement widening, with minimal traffic management and no reduction in parking throughout this period.

John Heaney Electrical Limited (JHE), the Livingston-based electrical, mechanical and HVAC specialist, has become an official charity partner of local counselling service Smile. The firm has signed an initial 12-month deal with the charity, which was set up 10 years ago to help young people in West Lothian suffering from mental health problems. JHE managing director Mark Heaney said: “I know there are challenges in the third sector when it comes to funding.

James Dornom from Currie has been selected as part of the 11-strong Scotland coarse fishing team which defends the Celtic Cup this weekend. He is joined by Rosalind Cassidy and Heather Lauriston, two members of the Edinburgh and Lothians Coarse Angling Club and they travel to the River Weaver at Northwich in North-West England for the match hosted by Wales.

The government say that the trade visit to India this week will emphasise the benefits of the UK-India trade deal for Scottish businesses and will grow the Scottish economy by £190 million a year. The Prime Minister will lead the trade mission along with the Scotch Whisky Association and producers, but while the government said that whisky is "a big winner" in the deal with India, there are opportunities for other Scottish products such as shortbread and Irn-Bru.

Police are appealing for information following a near collision on the A1 near Haddington. Around 12.55pm on Thursday, 11 September, 2025 a HGV travelling south failed to follow road closure signage and entered a cordon, knocking over several traffic cones and almost colliding with a police car. There were no reported injuries. Police Constable Tony Keating said: “Following extensive enquiries, I am appealing to anyone who was driving on the A1, either north or south, around that time on Thursday, 11 September to review their dash-cam footage and come forward with any information which could assist our investigation.” Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 1195 of 11 September, 2025.

The death of a man on Arthur's Seat earlier today is being treated by police as unexplained although there are not thought to be any suspicious circumstances. Emergency services were called to Holyrood Park at 2.35pm this afternoon, Tuesday, October 7 2025, following reports of a man having taken unwell. An air ambulance was dispatched to the incident but the man was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Hearts women will host Capital rivals Hibs in a mouth-watering Sky Sports Cup, quarter-final tie, it was confirmed today. Rachel Corsie, the former Glasgow City defender who has collected 154 Scotland caps, and is also a four-time winner of this competition with Glasgow City, conducted the draw with Fiona McIntyre, the managing director of the Scottish Women's Premier League. Glasgow City will play Aberdeen while Celtic host Queen's Park, the one remaining ScottishPower Women's Premier League 2 side.

The Edinburgh Boiler Company (EBC) has celebrated its tenth birthday by giving away more than £20,000 worth of gifts to customers. Founded in 2015 by Mark Glasgow, the company marked the milestone last month by running a range of competitions over ten business days. Included in the giveaway were a 12-panel solar panel kit, a custom-made Ideal boiler (and free installation) and free servicing for 10 years.

Dr Scott Arthur, MP for Edinburgh South West, said visiting the former Balerno Police Station filled him with hope for the future. The Westminster MP was invited following the acquisition of the single-storey building from Police Scotland by Balerno Village Trust (BVT). Dr Arthur spent nearly an hour touring the building guided by Emma Galloway, chair of the BVT, and he said: “While the building needs a little care, its potential is undeniable.

The West Calder Dogs Trust has received the largest grant ever donated to support the charity’s work in Scotland from the John William Hay Charitable Trust. A record amount of £1.3million has been pledged by the Scottish charity towards the rebuilding of facility.  The generous donation is not only the largest grant from a trust Dogs Trust has ever received in Scotland, but also John William Hay Charitable Trust's largest donation to any charity.
