Just a spoonful of political will could make a profound difference for those least able to afford the most basic of resources 💧

Let's get get some policy champions to address this -- both bottom-up (low-income rate assistance) and top-down (system financing)
gregspierce.bsky.social
Wherein @edithdeguzman.bsky.social & I continue to beat the drum for more system financing support which will indirectly help and customer assistance which will directly help affordability outcomes.

Or we could just keep the status quo of measuring and talking about the problem w/o addressing it

Not just electricity that's getting too expensive in Southern California -- water bills are a growing problem too, @ianjames.bsky.social reports: www.latimes.com/environment/...

Proud to join @gregspierce.bsky.social & our research team in unleashing this new resource for SoCal communities after 1 ½ years of work! Water equity begins with knowing where your community is starting from and where it’s going. If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.

Our 2025 SoCal Community Water Systems Atlas sheds light on disparities in drinking water quality, affordability, governance & climate resilience. See the report, map & dataset: bit.ly/3HU5Jqi @edithdeguzman.bsky.social @gregspierce.bsky.social @laurendunlap.bsky.social #UCLA #UCLALuskin @ucanr.edu

Trees are essential, but LA streets need cooling now. A new initiative, ShadeLA, is launching today — racing to fill shade gaps ahead of looming megaevents with a neighborhood legacy mindset
Made in the shade
"We're trying to change the way that we as Angelenos think about our neighborhoods, so that we actually look around and say, where can there be more shade — in the same way that many of us have though...

“There’s a lot of reasons to despair right now, but if we change our radio frequency a little bit, we can connect to a whole different feeling. We can actually create the city we want, in the neighborhoods that we deserve.” @edithdeguzman.bsky.social Go see this show if you can!

Highly recommend reading this brief but critically important dose of reality about the role of vegetation in spreading -- or stopping! -- urban 🔥 written by @ucanr.bsky.social colleague Max Moritz. Major pending decisions depend on this knowledge getting out there www.latimes.com/opinion/stor...
Contributor: California's proposed ban on plants near homes could be dangerously bad advice
A strict 'Zone 0' rule against landscaping is risky. Well-maintained and watered vegetation could prevent the spread of fires.

This is a snapshot re: which water systems were affected, who they serve, and how they might move forward.

To coincidentally match the 11 water supply systems, it took 11 authors from @luskininnovation.bsky.social , @ucanr.bsky.social, @umassamherst.bsky.social & Stantec to compile!

Went back out into the #PalisadesFire burn scar this week to collect forensic LiDAR data on trees and fire dynamics. Things that give me hope: a newly planted oak and a few mature CA natives bouncing back 4 months after being heavily scorched.
A newly planted coast live oak offers hope. I don’t know who planted it but intend to find out! This oak’s cracked bark is an indicator of heat stress from the fire, but quite a lot of green growth in the canopy tells the story of a tree trying to survive. Our crew back in the field collecting forensic data on trees using a high-res 3D scanner Vigorous growth on a redwood that was fully burned from the roots up.
