I am at about 100. ONLY because I taught mineralogy!!!!

No kidding. We need to update the book we are using!

Students really overestimate what we know. I asked them how many minerals do they think I can recognize out of the 3,000ish! My three classes said 3000. 😂😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣 Did not deny nor confirm. Lol

One of my favorite days from my planetary science for non-STEM majors class is when we mention Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin!

Other than her research, my favorite facts:
- Her childhood music teacher was Gustav Holst, composer of The Planets suite
- She advised two notable Franks: Drake and Kameny

Cecilia Payne-Gaposchkin ✨ figured out what stars are made of ✨ when she was just 25. 🔭🧪

Her PhD thesis basically established the Harvard astro department — at a time when Harvard didn't officially allow woman students.

I wrote this little profile to mark the 100th anniversary of her thesis:

Similarly, the AI boom has forced teachers who actually care about student learning to radically reconfigure their classes in order to disincentivize students from using the cheating machines they now have easy access to and which systemically undermine student learning. No one asked for this.

I think this is what has been so disheartening: academia is full of experts happily abandoning their experience and expertise just to get on the AI train like this, sigh. We know better. And we owe our students better.
