Visual Riff: Sweet and Sour

The phrase "Sweet and Sour" symbolizes life's duality. Through photography, this concept transforms into a visual language of contrasts — color, texture, and emotion woven together in one frame. These pairs capture the visual and emotional polarity of its subject.

Visual Riff: Sweet and Sour

Traditionally, the phrase "Sweet and Sour" symbolizes life's duality - the tension between joy and melancholy, love and pain. Through photography, this concept transforms into a visual language of contrasts — color, texture, and emotion woven together in one frame.

Photos from our 1in6by2030 project, Climate Elders, which was recently featured at the 9th Annual Abuja Photo Festival in Abuja, Nigeria.

As a co-founder, I had the opportunity to talk about our initiative, our work, and connect with the Nigerian photography community. #AbujaPhotoFestival2025

Recently, Donald Trump threatened Nigeria if its leaders did not stop the violence against Christians. Back in 2013, I documented the war there and saw the tragic aftermath of violent attacks. There is little evidence that Christians are attacked more than other religious groups in Nigeria.#nigeria

Visual Riff: "Office" Spaces

Socializing with colleagues or friends blur the line between work and personal identity.

This selection from my archive explores the idea of the "office" as a social setting— a space of cultural identity that defines what our work means to us.

Photo of the Day: On the set of The Veil Is Burning, a newlywed wife is gagged and killed by her in-laws, who are furious over the paltry dowry. Pakistan, 1998. Though such murders are now rare, the view that a married woman belongs exclusively to her husband's family has been slow to die.

Abridged: Stories For Change -- Ep 13 Ed Kashi & Julie Winokur
Photojournalist Ed Kashi and documentary filmmaker Julie Winokur have spent decades telling urgent, human stories — from climate injustice to ageing, migration, and forgotten coastlines. In this episode of From the Marginlands, Arati and Prem talk to them about the art of long-form storytelling, the patience it demands, and why bearing witness matters now more than ever.
