Just a guy on Bluesky ...
No. Not implying you did, either. But you certainly know more about The Station fire than many of us ever will. Thank you for that. I was just struck and saddened by the loss of life in Switzerland that unfortunately appears to be history repeating itself.

There are also parallels to the Cocoanut Grove fire on 1942. Basement room, narrow stairs as the only egress, flammable ceiling material. I immediately thought of The Station and Cocoanut Grove as the story’s details became clearer. Tragic story that I wish did not have such common threads.

This is in Medford, Oregon, not Massachusetts. No hospital in Medford, MA and the street names do not exist in Medford, MA.

That and being jack of all trades (all but play by play) at our college station was it. I never made a career of it though 2 good college friends did.

I was a news intern there in college (I wrote a letter and asked if they’d take me on) and did well enough to be trusted as a stringer during and after the internship semester. Pat Carroll was news director then, before she went to NewsRadio 88.

You're also ready for the apocalypse! Those units are tanks, and it looks a lot like the one WELI sent me out with as a stringer back in 1986...

To this day I wonder if either of them was on duty the next night or, worse, were among the six who answered their last alarm.

What a start to your career. I’m sure you’ve never forgotten. I haven’t. Went to a show at the Centrum the night before the fire. It was a warm night. I recall waving to 2 firefighters sitting in an open bay door of the Central Fire House walking from the parking lot.
