Summer reading:

Been on my TBR pile for a while. Really enjoyed it. Recommend.

The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley

A beautiful gem of a book - just 154 pages. Highly recommend.
July 31, 2025 at 2:42 PM
Enjoyable day at Voice 21’s Speaking Summit in London. Particularly good to hear from teachers enacting an oracy education.

Another 🔥 poem to add to teaching Unseen Poetry at #AlevelEnglishLit 🎓🍎
#TeamEnglish

For me (teaching Edexcel) I would compare it with from #PoemsoftheDecade A Minor Role by UA Fanthorpe Theme: illness.
August 31, 2024 at 6:22 PM
The other one I liked - and yes I will be using it to illustrate the theme of blood and hands in Macbeth #TeamEnglish - is this one:

Network of blood vessels in the human hand

Came across a set of fascinating research images from UCL 🍎🎓 1/2

This one is called: Accelerated Forgetting ‘This image shows responses to a memory test … participants copy a drawing, and then draw it again from memory three times’ at intervals.

I use feeds to find them. These are mine but curate them to your interests. I also like the fact that you can search/ link by emoji 📌🍎🎓 are my current ones.

Goodness I just tried this and it got worse! 🎓🍎

Eyemouth harbour (spot the seal)
Visiting family who live nearby
Yes!
August 25, 2024 at 4:42 PM
Just to confirm: the seal this morning was clearly smiling at me, right?

Remind me again: why am I heading back down South for GCSE results when I could be beside the seaside a little longer?

Last show we’re seeing at Edinburgh Fringe: ‘Ari’ a Korean musical.

Hopefully can return next year - EdFringe is such a joyous event! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 💕

Day 2 of EdFringe

I think there are 4 of us in the audience for this one 😆

AND there is AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION 😬 😱

‘We paint various pictures on stage using the traditional Korean hat called sangmo. You'll have a mysterious experience with us, and it will make you want to come back again.’

Final show: Ha! Milton Jones comedy

About to go into our first of three Edinburgh Fringe Shows. Excited!

Still with me? 😆

15. Watermelon Man

Upbeat, gorgeous poem and with teacher hat on, fab for Unseen A level poetry comparison. For Edexcel, maybe with Please Hold/Furthest Distance/On Her Blindness compare the methods both poets use to explore human experiences or human interaction with the world.

13. Off the Record by Ronald Wallace.

Another beautiful poem which would be amazing for #Alevel poetry practice and a great one for comparison with #edexcel Poems of the Decade family/memory/loss themes.

12. Dinosaurs in the Hood by Danez Smith (2014) is 🔥

The art reference here is Hollywood movies, specifically Jurassic Park.

Again compare to Ode on a Grayson Perry Urn.

Also, I have a bit of an obsession with ekphrastic poems!

Again just the opening below:
August 18, 2024 at 4:47 PM
11. Aubade with burning city by Ocean Vuong (2014)

The art reference is to the song: White Christmas

Ekphrastic poem to pair with Ode to a Grayson Perry urn.

This poem imo takes the idea of an ekphrastic poem to a completely new, intense level. 🤯

The poem opens:
August 18, 2024 at 4:44 PM
10. Eyewitness Travel or Self portrait in front of a small mirror by Will Harris (2017)

(Also, the poem Estruch references in the previous post Say by Will Harris is phenomenal.)

Possible comparison Furthest Distance I’ve Travelled - place/identity
August 18, 2024 at 4:41 PM
9. Say by Sarala Estruch
(2021) Father/daughter, memory. Also a ghazal: brilliant poetic couplet form.

Possible comparison (you may disagree) with Out of the Bag by Heaney

Also sharing another poem of hers ‘I research the origins of the modern rose & discover’ just because I love it ...
