Son of Alfred The Great, Edward The Elder is one of the great kings in English history. This is a page dedicated to him and shining a light on his brilliance with a combination of facts and humour
King Egbert of Wessex was a great-grandfather of Edward The Elder and a fine ruler in is own right. Reigning for 37 years, a notably long period for the 9th century, Egbert's reign saw him take on the Vikings against whom he suffered defeat in battle before bouncing back and inflicted revenge.

His father is known as "the great", one of his sons referred to as "the magnificent", his sister was "the Lady of the Mercians" has the time come to give Edward a more impressive title than "The Elder"?

Edward The Elder was not as fond of learning as his father but the education that Alfred was providing for Edward was standing him in good stead. Edward was described as being humble, affable and gentle towards all whilst remaining fully obedient to his father, not always the case in those days.

What is telling of the nature of Edward The Elder is the fact he died only a few days after subduing a rebellion at Chester. This was testament to the sheer will of the man. Boundless energy, relentless against his enemies and a fierce determination to protect his subjects

If you mention the name Edward The Elder to almost anyone you know ,the chances are, all you’ll get is a blank stare gazing back at you. Really, this is a travesty. There is a case to be made that Edward is the greatest king in English history.

Although I don't necessarily like it, I can understand how Edward The Elder has come to be overlooked. I can't say the same for his sister, Aethelflaed. As a woman, her story is particularly remarkable and yet, notwithstanding modern works on her, she is not widely known.

Edward The Elder's reign was sandwiched in between his father's, Alfred The Great, and his son's, Aethelstan, victor at Brunanburh, both of whom are far more recognisable to the layman then Edward is.

Edward The Elder succeeded his father Alfred The Great in 899 although he faced a challenge to his rule, from a cousin named Aethelwold. Aethelwold was the son of Alfred's brother, Aethelred, and he had been overlooked as king of Wessex in favour of Alfred in 871 due to his tender years.
