My parents used to toss peanuts onto their patio for them. They kept the peanuts in a bowl just inside the patio door. After a while the jays learned to come inside and help themselves.

Back in the 80s Spy magazine did a piece about how Newport ads all seemed to have a really disturbing undercurrent of violence. This one fits right in.

The undercurrent of antisemitism that reveals itself when you look any deeper than whatever is available in the mass market has never ceased to surprise me. It’s amazing how few steps it takes some people to go from unusual lights in the sky to *The Protocols of the Elders of Zion*.

Yeah, back when I was a credulous teen I was big on UFOs. I’ve maintained a sort of hobbyist’s interest in the field, and keep up on the literature to some extent.

And quite often their idea of a “source” is a graphic someone posted on Facebook that makes an assertion that they agree with.

Yeah, I can’t remember who said it, but someone pointed out that anything that existed before you were born is simply the way things are, anything introduced when you are young is an exciting innovation, and anything introduced when you’re older is an affront to the natural order.

He got a lot of compliments from his supporters at the time, but he went right back to his usual hairstyle, so I guess he either genuinely thinks it looks good, or considers it a sort of trademark at this point.

There are some photos of him at an event with his hair slicked back. Apparently something catastrophic happened to his customary hairdo right before he was supposed to go on stage, so he just brushed it straight back. It looked shockingly OK.
