While #fastfashion brands keep flooding the market with cheap, synthetic garments, much of what we discard ends up in Asia and Africa, polluting water, harming local workers health, and overwhelming local reuse markets.

The EU is betting heavily on #textile #recycling, but its potential cannot keep pace with the mountains of clothes we produce.

Our planet is bursting at the seams with too much clothing. Recycling alone won’t fix it.

Europe’s #cars can’t be green if the steel they’re made from isn’t

Almost a fifth of all #steel in the EU is used to make cars. Most of this is produced using polluting coal-power

Cleaning up the steel behind Europe’s cars means clearing the air we breathe – while giving existing steel a new life

In recent years, EU circular economy policies have too often lacked the bite needed to tackle the root causes of the environmental and #ClimateCrisis: Europe’s #overconsumption and dependence on #RawMaterials.

The #CircularEconomy Act will be a crucial test.

🚨 Food waste, textiles, vehicles: European Parliament falls short of real solutions

As @ec.europa.eu prepares a new #CircularEconomyAct, amidst a deregulatory push and a deepening #waste crisis, today's votes fall short of the bold action Europe needs

🚘 Vehicles:

The Parliament caved to #automotive industry pressure, weakening proposals meant to boost circularity and reduce environmental impacts across the whole lifecycle of cars.

🌽 Food:

For the first time, the EU will have binding #FoodWaste reduction targets - but they are nowhere near the commitment to halve waste across the supply chain.

👕 Textiles:

#ExtendedProducerResponsibility schemes will hold brands accountable and support municipalities and the #SecondHand sector facing a flood of discarded clothes.

But they must also address overproduction and provide support to non-EU countries impacted by EU used #textiles exports.

eeb.org
72% of EU renewable ⚡️ comes from rural regions

But for villages, the story isn’t just about climate targets – it’s about livelihoods, services, and the future of their communities

This week, we warned the @ec.europa.eu about the danger of allowing too many exceptions to the ban🚫

Exceptions must be strictly limited to scenarios where reuse is truly impossible

These exceptions include:

🔥allowing brands to destroy products if they can show they made just two attempts to donate them to a social enterprise
🔥a potential free pass to destroy branded products

But the prevalence of unsold goods is a direct result of the #fashion industry's #overproduction
eeb-economyclimate.bsky.social
Destroying unsold goods is a shocking waste of our precious resources⚠️

The EU #Ecodesign law banned the destruction of unsold #textiles...

...but a raft of potential exceptions risk allowing companies to easily side-step the ban, and keep overproducing and destroying short-lived products 🧵👇
