Fuck ICE, all my buddies hate ICE
They keep trying to cause a riot so they can clamp down on us harder, and they keep failing. Fucking losers.

You made a firm, provocative claim that ‘elected officials aren’t activists.’ It’s not pedantic to disagree with your claim
January 21, 2026 at 6:13 AM
I know she was a career politician, I am not a fan of hers, I’m not defining her as an activist, stop clutching your pearls on behalf of activists.

My point is that the boundaries between the two categories are permeable, and I’m using Pelosi as an example only because she’s your fav
January 21, 2026 at 6:05 AM
Her position was driven by the preferences of her constituents, yes, but in order to affect the change they wanted to see, she had to adopt the position of an activist on this issue
January 21, 2026 at 6:02 AM
I know her district was in support of equal rights for gay people, and that’s obvious from how I phrased my last post.

My point is that Pelosi’s work from that point was not to simply ‘write and vote on the policies of government.’ She had to *advocate* on behalf of her constituents
January 21, 2026 at 6:00 AM
That doesn’t make it not activism, when she was representing her California constituents in Congress, which was broadly not in support of gay marriage
January 21, 2026 at 5:49 AM
Agreed on all points, she was an exceptionally savvy politician in general and a very powerful speaker of the house. I disagree with her on a lot of issues, but to her credit she was waaaaay ahead of the curve on gay marriage. She pushed for it publicly years before Obergefell. Activism!

Why
January 21, 2026 at 5:32 AM
Genuinely curious about the model non-activist politician, can be from any time period
January 21, 2026 at 5:32 AM
lol okay okay you got me, but in seriousness, who’s your guy
January 21, 2026 at 5:31 AM
Who’s your platonic ideal of a non-activist politician, the all-time goat of not pushing for change in any particular direction
January 21, 2026 at 5:27 AM
I think the problem is not activists in government positions, it’s the invasion of gov positions by activists who are *fundamentally opposed to may of the concepts of good governance*. My beef is with the right wing psycho activists, not activists writ large
January 21, 2026 at 5:24 AM
Agreed 100%, but I think they’re dogshit at government because I oppose their ideological goals, not because I think they have a skill issue
January 21, 2026 at 5:22 AM
I would consider everybody who comes up through the Federalist Society an activist, and there’s tons of them in elected positions
January 21, 2026 at 5:17 AM
I also don’t think it’s relatively rare that an activist becomes a politician, there’s plenty of non-ideological power hungry goons in the political class, but there’s also TONS of politicians driven by specific ideologies who want to create the conditions for change in the direction of their goals
January 21, 2026 at 5:16 AM
We gotta agree to disagree on your last two claims
January 21, 2026 at 5:13 AM
So elected officials aren’t activists, except if they do it sparingly, and then it’s effective? My whole point is that the boundaries between the two groups are porous
January 21, 2026 at 5:07 AM
You seem to be arguing in good faith so I’ll try to dial down the snark, but elected officials in the 80s and 90s definitely engaged in behavior that would fit your definition of activist
January 21, 2026 at 4:58 AM
When were they separate careers
January 21, 2026 at 4:50 AM
If you truly believe the boundaries between those two things are absolutely firm and should never be crossed, yeah dude I dunno what to tell you other than I think you are wrong and this is a weirdly naive conception of politics
January 21, 2026 at 4:47 AM
What is the purpose of an activist and what is the purpose of an elected official
January 21, 2026 at 4:35 AM
Elected officials aren’t activists, my god, holy cow, get a load of this guy, etc
January 21, 2026 at 4:31 AM
If this thing isn’t more popular then it won’t be as popular oh no
January 21, 2026 at 4:06 AM
