Removal of the controversial statue is part of an ongoing discussion in Hoorn [7]. The resurgence of Nationalist sentiment in the Netherlands and ill-informed glorification of the VOC past does not offer much hope for a quick decision to come clean with the colonial past.

The sculptor of this statue, Ferdinand Leenhoff the brother-in-law of Édouard Manet, faces the viewer in the painting Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe. A 1943 study made during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands concluded that Coen was just meting out justice following 17th century practice [6].

Dat ook, maar in dit geval beter te duiden als “imperialisme”. Net als ik vind dat iemand die je een nazi noemt de uitvlucht geeft dat hij niet aan een gaskraan draait en “cultuur-christen” eigenlijk een “neo-nationalist” is.

Most charts leave out the local climate average or the expected warming trend. Last year this led the Dutch MetOffice to declare it a ‘slightly above average year’ whereas it was below the warming trend whilst globally the world was ‘positively cooking’. This nuance gets lost in the dumbing down…

I am disappointed in the MetOffice: averages should be displayed as dots with expected and confidence levels. A bit like in this plot:

Wanneer gaat de Volkskrant aankaarten dat de CV van de verantwoordelijke staatssecretaris geen enkele aanknopingspunt oplevert voor relevante expertise? Wel rattenvanger en ‘contra-expertise mijnbouw schade’ zonder enige bouw- of constructie expertise.

You’re right. The point was that the rock that was dumped was the waste from the mine that contained quite a lot of the host rock without proper checks on what it contained..
