It's worse than that. They will put in concrete barriers for bike lanes, then *rip them out* for floppy plastic ones b/c the concrete ones scratch people's cars and get them upset. True story.

Packs of cops clusterd in subway stations playing candy crush on their phones

Claiming to ride bikes, then back-room deals to block and rip out actual bike lanes for patrons

SO MUCH THIS. I live in Los Angeles, and there are more car deaths here than murders every year. My local representative, who is great, started calling them "traffic violence" instead of "traffic accidents".

I agree. I don't want the hope of self driving serices existing tp be all that we use to hang our dreams of better cities on. Just that over time, it *might* help a trend towards less personal car ownership, We still OFC need fewer VMT, and lots of public transit, car free zones, bike lanes.

And second most cars sit empty parked on public streets or in driveways 90% of the time. It would be great for cities and towns if we could use that space for people and not for empty parked unused personal cars. If personal car ownership starts to feel unnecessary w/ these services - big win.

Two things -- I don't think we need to defend human driving jobs. These aren't jobs that use human creativity or talent or emotion ot intellect in some special way. We do those jobs that get lost to get captured somewhere??? (My choice is UBI, but, that's a "yes, and...")

And again, man, what are you talking about? Where do you think those used cars come from? Also gotta sell some cars at the average price of a new car, to generate some more cars for the ongoing (more affordable) used car market.

People carry $1000 computers around in their pockets because we all decided it's a thing we do now. it's not just the cost.
November 28, 2025 at 10:20 AM
No, the point is that cost isn't the top factor that kept people from EVs. Familiarity and habit and vibes were. So saying "they're better" is actually a pretty good way to try to address that. Problem is that enviros don't hold a lot of social-captial microphone space -- THAT is the problem.

First season works b/c it has the grounding of a mother insane and desperate to save her beloved, only son. The "bigger-ness" of all the other seasons does not equal the depth of this emotional weight and therefore are all bullshit and dumb in comparison.
November 28, 2025 at 1:19 AM
Man, what are you talking about? People finance crazy trucks that cost twice that all the time. Electric cars, Teslas even, cost THE SAME as the average price of an American car, and have for several years now.

Microwaves, air fryers, induction cooktops etc., could go a long way to making micro kitchens in SROs quite safe and very useful for residents' food prep now too. probably, in contrast to the past.

In LA there's "Americana at Brand", where they did indeed build housing on top of the mall, entirely re-simulating a neighborhood in the most non-organic way possible. Giant parking lot underneath it. But it's fancy condos.

There is nothing interesting, specific, or wonderful on here.

But mainly with depression for the moment, seriously, just do some things you like and enjoy. It will help. Go get a great cappuccino at a lovely cafe. Buy the book you've been wanting at your favorite bookstore in person. Glass of wine, at the bar, at sunset - or whatever.

I have always liked a birthday travel/ trip because the focus can mostly be on the travel/enrichment part - and just a little bit on the birthday.
November 16, 2025 at 8:52 PM
For all depression, super practical and clinically-studied effective advice: do an activity that you enjoy/ in a place you feel good/ with people that you like/love (if possible). Could be a nature walk, or day of doing new things in your town, or pre-arranging a trip/vacation.
November 16, 2025 at 8:50 PM
So much this. And needing to make car payment or car insurance payments make life expenses so much more for people trying to get by with not a lot. Walkability and public transit are an economic safety net.

Was this antipathy towards Biden over Gaza policy causing turnout depression? Is that the thought about younger/ more progressive voters?

Comey is also responsible for prosecuting Martha Stewart for insider trading. Out of all the Wall Street crimes to go after? I mean... he definitely has a type.

It's parallel play! The MAGA faithful are not cllge-educated, and not "in on the con" in the way that the Bllre class is. The transaction for MAGA faithful voters is the unleashed permission structure for cruelty and racism. The transaction for the Bllnre class is the levers of power, unconstrained.
November 3, 2025 at 10:09 PM
I mean, there would be a fun way to *bleep* this and everyone would be "in" on the joke b/c we know how SLJ talks. It would be great.

Ok -- I have no heard these specifics tied to this and I am very much buying it. I used to think is was styling and desire for "adulthood "(i.e. sex etc) that made previous generation look older at the same age. But HFS - sunscreen, leaded gas air pollution, smoking.
