Y’all, look at this shitty goddamned ad. How can the folks at Google sleep at night allowing their pockets to be lined with the dollars of scammer companies targeting their users this way? (This is a rhetorical question; I’m expressing outrage, not seeking an answer to this question.)

I baked a variation on a recent coffee cake. Next time it’ll be perfect, I’m sure of it! Right? Right? I’ll make the streusel better. I’ll remember to alternate adding the milk & the flour. I’ll remember to only pour half the batter in the pan & add filling. I’ll remember to try that other flour.

In an early scene Akhnaten is being dressed for his coronation and appears absolutely naked on stage. What we actually saw was Christopher in the body-suit. Israel's design was complete in every anatomical detail and convincing to such a high degree that many in the audience thought they were looking at the real Christopher when they saw this poor, misshapen, hermaphroditic Akhnaten. One can easily imagine that, along with the expected musical and acting problems, there must be some major psychological difficulties involved in rendering such a character! Christopher never complained, and I think actually began to enjoy these nightly transformations. Once in his Akhnaten suit, though, he couldn't see to his normal bodily needs, and he once complained to me that, starting the evening before a performance, he couldn't drink liquids of any kind. At any rate, both the visual and vocal impression Christopher made as Akhnaten was decidedly startling, especially when Akhnaten sings for the first time at the end of Act I. A number of people in our audiences were quite upset by Christopher's appearance on the stage. One very famous musician, a man who had spent his life in the theater and might have been expected to be aware of the wonders achieved by make-up artists, expressed genuine sorrow that we had not been able to engage a less grotesque-looking singer for our title role! Near the end of the New York City Opera run, we received a letter denouncing us for (1) having found some poor hermaphrodite; (2) forcing him to display his deformities in public; and (3) making him sing my music!

…in Western and Indian music in the following way: In Western music we divide time—as if you were to take a length of time and slice it the way you slice a loaf of bread. In Indian music (and all the non-Western music with which I'm familiar), you take small units, or "beats," and string them together to make up larger time values. This was brought home to me quite powerfully while working with Ravi and Alla Rakha in the recording studio. There we were with the musicians sitting around waiting for me to notate the music to be re-corded. This was never done in advance, no matter how much I pleaded with Ravi to meet ahead of time so I could prepare the instrumental parts before the musicians arrived. He was quite happy to meet early but he never used the time for writing. Instead, there was tea, discussion about music, tuning his sitar and the tamboura (the string drone which I was often called upon to play; one of my accomplishments from those early morning sessions with Ravi. Finally, when the musicians had arrived, Ravi would begin. He would sing the music to me, and I would write it down, part by part. In other words, if the piece was, say, three minutes long, he would first sing the entire three-minute flute part, then the entire three-minute violin part, and so on through our small orchestra of about nine players. Some of Boulanger's exercises were not unlike this, and though I was impressed by Ravi's ability to hear all the individual parts of a piece composed on the spot entirely in his head and then dictate them note by …note and line by line, the process was not unfamiliar to me. The problem came when I placed bar lines in the music as we normally do in Western music. This created unwanted accents. When the music was played back, Alla Rakha caught the error right away. No matter where I placed the bar line (thereby "dividing" the music in the regular Western style), he would catch me. "All the notes are equal," he kept piping at me. The whole thing was very unnerving. I had a studio full of musicians waiting for their parts, and I had to instantaneously solve a notational problem I had never confronted before. Finally, in desperation, I dropped the bar lines altogether. And there, before my eyes, I could see what Alla Rakha had been trying to tell me. Instead of distinct groupings of eighth notes, a steady stream of rhythmic pulses stood revealed. Delighted, I exclaimed to Alla Rakha: "All the notes are equal!" He rewarded me with an ear-to-ear smile.
