AI is being used to improve weather and climate prediction... But not in a make-you-dumber, planet-destroying, chatgpt kinda way.

New vid, ft. my best segue yet, here:

🔥 New fire paper out - Fire regime changes in Canada: an update. Overall, the big-picture trends remain consistent: annual area burned, the annual number and size of large fires are still increasing, but the total number of fires for all sizes continue to decline.

Fire regime changes in Canada: an update
Given the recent rise in extreme fires, we present an update to a previous Canadian wildfire trend analysis (1959-2015) with nine additional years of data (2016-2024), an improved area burned dataset,...

The PM said additional national interest projects will be announced in the coming weeks. This has us thinking about projects that prepare Canada for the future, not set us further apart. What national projects would you like to see funded in Canada?

BTW, Jim Stanford was at the Canadian Senate Finance committee meeting and he also noted that Canada has to do something to reverse that Canadian investment in the US - especially our pension plans.
eileenottawa.bsky.social
I'm not sure how it is a 'smear'. As a Canadian, it was offputting for our PM to be promoting Canadian private investment *into* the US. On top of what we may well pay into US military-industrial complex.

Not to mention pushing Keystone XL

Yesterday Trump said Americans don't want to buy Canadian made vehicles. So our opening up to EU and Chinese vehicles shouldn't be an issue with it comes to CUSMA.

And at this point, I'm just talking about imports while we cross the manufacturing bridge

Yes, the rhetoric is easy to discount. I rarely hear him mention combatting climate change. And his actions to date imply he doesn't see it as that strong of a moral obligation. Meanwhile, North America will be left behind in the transition.

Given American automakers, along with our governments, are wallowing on that clear future, the least Carney can do is facilitate imports of more affordable EVs into our country to tide us over.

Carney's use of the term "Tragedy of the Horizon" addresses that 'reading the room properly' issue. And at this point it is a Tragedy of the Here and Now

"reading the room properly"? In terms of public opinion, perhaps. In terms of the planet being on fire, no, he did not read anything 'properly'. The current moment absolutely does demand a full court press, and anyone saying otherwise is wrong.

He’s not a career politician so why did he want to get elected? He doesn’t need the job, right?

Perhaps he realizes that the current moment does not demand a full court press on climate change. I’m not saying he’s right to ignore it, but he definitely was reading the room properly.

Can we call premiers or other politicians unCanadian for not reducing GHGs significantly?

"There’s a battle underway to win the energy export market between the world’s two largest economies: The US wants the world to buy its fossil fuels, while China wants to sell the world its clean energy technologies. For now, there is a clear winner: China." - Akshat Rathi

I watched a couple of the Finance Committee meetings in recent years when Tiff Macklem was there. Better than Question Period. Though some of the questions were just as bad as the framing in Question Period.

Two weeks ago the PBO came out with the Economic and Fiscal update and release the graph on the left. What happens if you set the axis to 0 (as one should) and how it is historical context. That is the graph on the right (reproducing only the dark blue line because that is the numbers they gave).

...very warm out there, with some humidity (Td's in the ~mid-teens average) thought I'd produce a Humidex chart/analysis with 3PM EDT data...cause it's October😅 (average Humidex ~30-33 C) fits the light yellow shading area...not bad. (numbers are actual temps)

We have a dozen tiny garden gnomes in a garden along the sidewalk. Toddlers often squeal and sometimes play with them. Today a cool-looking ~30yr-old dude stopped, knelt down, and carefully rearranged them into a little party on a stump, then continued on his way smoking a cigar. Happy Saturday all!
