Languages are academically interesting
And they provide opportunities.

But I view language learning as a personal path, also. A small way in my microcosm to foster tolerance, unity and understanding

A constant reminder that people are important outside of the sphere into which I was born

I’m 44 and have thin eyebrows, people assume I overplucked them back in the 90s. Nope, it’s just my genes. Even as a teen I wished they were thicker

There are over 7,000 languages in use today, but 95% of them are used by just 5% of the world’s population.

Just 20 languages dominate the global linguistic landscape.

As a result, many of the world’s languages are endangered:

The last word: why half of the world's languages could vanish this century
There are around 7,000 languages spoken in the world, but that number is shrinking. Unesco estimates that half could disappear by the end of the century. So how are languages lost, and what does that…

Didn’t do any language learning last weekend, too indecisive. Last night I put all my languages in an online picker wheel, got Mandarin! THE language I’ve been saying all summer I’d learn, but never actually started! Now I can’t stop learning, and motivation is high. Just needed that push! #langsky

News headline "Suomi tirisee nyt tukalassa helteessä" - literal translation "Finland is now sizzling in uncomfortable heat", and the verb is normally just used about meat, the sound that it makes when grilling. Kinda hilarious used about people or a country. I mean, uncomfortable 😅

Such a beautiful day in Helsinki today. If you visited Helsinki in the spring, autumn, or winter, and didn’t fall in love with the city, please make sure you also visit in the summer when it’s hot and sunny. Today I feel like I really love my hometown!

My Spanish-Italian post made me think about language families in general. Someone who has learned many languages himself once told me that the variety (rather than the amount) of my languages is impressive. And if I were one to “collect all the languages” (hahah) or an aspiring hyperpolyglot, -

Today I decided to resume my Italian that I learned in school for a year in 1997 and haven’t used since (just a bit during trips to Italy in the early 2000s). Earlier this morning I couldn’t say anything except for some basic phrases (greetings, thanks, my name - stuff many people know already)

I can understand that a monolingual person who cannot read subtitles would want youtube auto-dubbing the videos, but that’s not me 😩

I had a dream last night I got some silly Chinese language tattoos on my face, and I just calmly used google lens to check the meaning, ON MY FACE

I sent my first postcrossing card in Lithuanian last week, to Lithuania, and it got registered today. The recipient was suprised ☺️

My July - September language plan:

40% Mandarin
40% Spanish
10% Japanese
5% Swedish
5% Lithuanian

Once I make progress in Mandarin, I’ll make some space for Italian

BTS are doing a comeback and world tour next year 😮 cool! Before their enlistment hiatus I followed them intensely, but I haven’t listened to them recently almost at all, not even sure why. I still think they’re awesome, and I should pay attention to their activities now

Yesterday was already warm, and today is even warmer, should be at least 23°C in the afternoon in Helsinki, I’m so happy 😌 (for a moment, it’s gonna get colder again from tomorrow)

I wonder why CDJapan and yesasia didn’t stock Tsubaki’s new single, I don’t know where else to order it without proxy

Besides the obvious, one thing I hate about taking sick leave is a past experience, where my boss didn’t believe me, thinking I was faking it. I’ve NEVER faked an illness to get time off work, but that experience messed with my brain, and now every time I get sick, I fear it will have consequences 🥲

Today I had my first Finnish summer potatoes, boiled in salt water, topped with butter and fresh dill, and the flavour was so delicious and powerful, it was almost overwhelming! (I’m also a huge spicy food lover, Finnish potatoes are just THAT good)

Unpopular opinon? I think content creator or social media influencer can be a valuable job. Many people have demanding jobs or stressful lives, and need some light entertainment for their free moments. I always see it listed as a useless job, but as long as the content is not harmful, I disagree

I like how even if a language you're learning has seemingly no relation to languages you know, there's logic or understanding that can be applied/transferred to from languages you know to the language you're learning. The time you spent learning languages wasn't wasted. #langsky

I might also be getting sick so maybe that’s why I’m feeling extra cold today
June 23, 2025 at 11:07 AM
It’s so cold in Finland these days, I feel miserable. It’s 8 am and I’m wearing a t-shirt, a thick sweatshirt, and a jacket, and I’m still so cold waiting outside, I can’t wait to get to work. Yesterday my hands turned all purple just from being outside. In June 😩
