Actually, the sailed from Greenland. Their leader was Leiv Eriksson, the son of Erik Raude, the Norwegian Viking who discovered, and colonized Greenland

Well… The Viking, Erik Raude (father to Leiv Eriksson who discovered America) colonized Greenland in 900AD. His descendants lived there for 500 years, but Greenland was “rediscovered” in 1721 by Danes and Norwegians, and was in 1952 officially a part of Denmark
