yeah it sucks bigtime, I have a little usb-c dongle, but it's not the same... sony and asus phones still have a jack (I don't really like the designs though)

That's what I feared... well, at least I've learned a lesson, and that laser wasn't working super great to begin with. Thanks for the help!

I have a second FZ-1 and I swapped the lasers to be sure that that is the problem, and it's definitely the laser.

It's tough, a re-cap, cleaning and lubrication might help, getting a good quality replacement laser is quite difficult but not impossible. There is also always an option of a drive replacement sd card reader, probably the most reliable.
