My once visit to Amsterdam was an experience. Walking down what i thought was a footpath only to have cyclists getting angry at me.
The locals know whats what, but as a tourist it can be mayhem.
Out of the city centre is very different. More a general "be nice to each other" attitude.

When I'm in london i stay at a hotel in zone 5 that is very multicultural. A lot cheaper than the city centre but still good.
Never had any issues (not saying there isn't your general crime) and usual community spirit

I once spent a night underneath the train station near the royal mail depot.
Train arrived from Cornwall at about 9pm ish. Connecting train back up north was about 6am. Tried staying in the station but they kicked us out.
No sleep that night. One of the reasons i donate to homeless charities.
