#Pinktober2025 Day 8: #Bluebuck
The Blue #Antelope, or Bluebuck, was a small species of South African antelope that went extinct in the early 1800s. European colonisation and overhunting was a major contribution to its ultimate demise.

#Pinktober2025 Day 7: #SyrianElephant
This enormous #elephant was used for warfare and ivory in the Middle East, which led to its extinction around 700BC. Supposedly, #Hannibal rode one of these war elephants into battle.

#Pinktober2025 Day 6: #YunnanLakeNewt
The Yunnan Lake #Newt was only found near the Kunming Lake in Yunnan, #China
It was declared extinct in 2005, due to habitat loss and damage, pollution, and invasive species.

#Pinktober2025 Day 5: #AtlasBear
The Atlas #Bear was a 9-foot long 1,000 pound North African brown bear that was hunted and killed for sport or captured for #gladiatorial games. It became extinct in the late 19th century due to overhunting.

#Pinktober2025 Day 4: #Quagga
This was a subspecies of #Zebra that lived in #SouthAfrica & was hunted to #extinction in the 19th century. There exists only one photograph of a live Quagga.
#TheQuaggaProject currently seeks to breed zebras to look similar to Quaggas, but they are considered lost.

The dunes were destroyed for naval fortifications in the Spanish-American War, and most of the voles along with them. Whatever voles survived were wiped out by feral cats (another reason to keep your cats indoors, people). The species was discovered in 1888 and declared extinct within a decade. 2/2

#Pinktober2025 Day 3: #GullIslandVole
The Gull Island Vole sadly doesn't get as much attention as the Dodo or Thylacine. It was a rodent that lived in a very small area of dune covered land in the New York islands. 1/2

#Pinktober2025 Day 2: #Thylacine (#TasmanianTiger)
The Thylacine was one of the few survivors of the Quaternary Extinction Event only to be out-competed by dingoes and dogs, over-hunted by humans, disease, and a decline in prey species. The last known Thylacine died in Hobart Zoo in 1936.

It had evolved to perfectly fit its environment, but couldn't adapt fast enough when humans showed up on their island with all manner of invasive #animals and were eradicated. Pour one out for the Dodo, a poorly misunderstood avian species that got dealt a bad hand. 2/2

Contrary to popular belief, this bird wasn't dumb or ill adapted for survival. 1/2
