If the setting (the technology) solves the problems the characters are supposed to suffer, the setting is wrong. True desperation is analog and cannot be digitized.

If the protagonist can "hack" probability with neural implants, gambling stops being a mystical challenge to Fate and becomes a cheap engineering puzzle. No risk, no abyss.
