It's not only part of NATO. Denmark is an EU member state as well - and the EU treaties also contain provisions for defending any member state that's under attack.

The EU member states are obliged to do so - not only as members of NATO - but as per the EU treaties. Hope the rest of NATO (minus the US of course...) would do too.

I am not quite sure what he meant by "in principle". In the same speech he also said that the protection of Denmark will be discussed at NATO which sort of seems a little awkward given the situation?

Hier ist auch nicht alles Gold was glänzt - am Möchtegern-Trump sind wir (tatsächlich dank Trump) auch nur knapp vorbeigeschlittert.
Aber immerhin hat sich das Land rechtzeitig besonnen und einen tollen Premierminister ins Amt gewählt.
