Silksong has a lot of great things going for it, but you run into certain spots where you just have to wonder what the design intent was. Because some sections go beyond challenging right into anti-fun territory and make you not want to play.

All games with battle passes need to take notes from Marvel Rivals by allowing you to unlock things you paid for at any time. Battle passes can only be bough during their active window but they should never expire for someone who already paid you. Taking people's money and then their time is fucked.

Damn. Nothing kills interest faster than a store with 'microtransactions' more expensive than any games I've bought this year. 2XKO goes from free to the most expensive game I own after two skin bundles.

Having a proper ranked mode in Guilty Gear Strive has massively improved the online experience of this game. I can just fight people. It's incredible.

Wuchang: Fallen Feathers has been maybe the biggest surprise for me this year. Definitely one of the best Souls-likes I've played. Need to finish it to see how things shake out but I love the level design and combat so far.

The AI in the new Mario Kart is exhausting me. How dare you boost twice. Here 8 red shells, 2 blue shells, a boomerang, and lighting when you're flying.

I'm in the beginning of Act 2 and, so far, Expedition 33 is the Final Fantasy game I've wanted for over 20 years. I adore this game.

I think I'd pay SNK more to take the celebrities out of the game.
April 3, 2025 at 5:25 PM
Not to be overly negative on the new Fatal Fury, but the two celebrity guests are the running for the most lifeless corporate nothing additions in fighting game history. I get the goal. They want more people buying. Maybe they get that. I'm actively being put off the game by them, though.

Does Marvel Rivals just not give a shit how poorly optimized their game is on PC. It crashes all the time for every reason you can imagine, and no one seems to have a reliable fix for it.

The new knockoff Lucio ball mode in Rivals is some of the worst design I've seen. Cooldowns are too long and speed is too homogeneous, so once some has the ball and a lead that is generally the round done with. There is no way to actually catch or interact with an opponent.

Eggers is 4 for 4. Nosferatu is another excellent film. He really is one of the best directors working today, and people should be throwing money at him to make whatever he wants.

Another batch of albums I missed today. I'm more impressed with these than the last group. Honestly, these might cause some shifts on my year-end list.
Kalandra - A Frame of Mind

Sergeant Thunderhoof - The Ghost of Badon Hill

Cave Sermon - Divine Laughter

The end of the year always feels like a mad rush to catch up on all the things you missed. Today has yielded a few really fun misses from throughout the year for me:

Game Awards was really great this year. A much better balance, wonderful way to address some big industry issues, truly impressive and exciting reveals, and Sam and Swen were great awards presenters.

I've been really enjoying Marvel Rivals even though I do think it's rough around the edges. I don't think its map design is the best, and readability can be a real issue, but it is more fun than OW has been since the launch of OW2.

I fucking love fighting games.
December 3, 2024 at 4:07 AM
Nothing is more infuriating in an ostensibly competitive game than relegating everything in the match to what is effectively a coin flip. To be clear, I mean Arishem in Marvel Snap. Playing it feels whatever, but fighting it is one of the worst experiences I've had in a game.

List season is upon us, and a lot of good stuff came out this year. Music is probably going to be the biggest bloodbath to organize a top 10 for. It might even end up a top 20 this year. Games and movies are, I think, an easier list, but still full of great releases.

Used the Steam Autumn sale to round out my New Blood Interactive catalog. They have a very impressive hit rate over these last few years. I now own most of what they've released.

Wicked is great and a fantastic movie to see in theaters. The only things I've seen definitively above it this year are Dune Part 2 and The Substance. Wicked is comfortably sitting next to Furiosa just under those 2.

Finished Arcane. It's the single best product ever produced by Riot. One of the best shows I've ever seen and a singularly beautiful piece of animation. Riot, please just ask for money to make more shows like this. People will pay you. I cannot fathom their other projects living up to this.

It was a good day. The new Opeth is incredible and seems likely to rank high on my year-end list. Fellowship and Defeated Sanity delivered exactly what I wanted from them. I need more time with Galneryus as I had the least for it yesterday, and it's the longest album here.
So this will be my day:

I need to finish Dragon Age and Metaphor, but the backlog was calling me today. I have finally started Kunitsu-Gami, and it's been a nice change of pace.
