That is a good idea I definitely didn't think of unfortunately, he was more of a gunslinger, he had solid silver pistols (and bullets).

Yes it definitely applies to digital art, and it's never wrong it's all a part of the
learning process, but you are understanding the basics of it!

Kind of like this if you imagine each as a layer stacked on top of each other.

Well the sketch would be the base, so imagine using a sketchbook and you draw with a pencil, that's a sketch.
Then you use a pen over the top, which is permanent that's the lineart.
Colour is obviously the colours you use, but shading is the darker colours you use to show off lighting.

And once a piece gets more complicated it can be used to keep things in the background on one or two layers, and things in foreground on another one or two layers.
But this can be applied to anything at all, it is best to play around with them to see what suits you!

So usually it is, Sketch, Lineart, colour then shade.
So the layer layout would be:
Layer 4 - lineart
Layer 3 - Shading (overlay)
Layer 2 - Colour
Layer 1 - Base Sketch
