The Wounded Amazon was born from a 5th century BC art contest for the Temple of Artemis at Ephesus. The greatest sculptors, Polykleitos, Phidias, and Kresilas, each made their version. When it came time to judge they all chose their 2nd favorite work and Polykleitos won. History remembers the doers.
