I've been remaking some control boards that are *digitally controlled* analog control loops
Logic signals controls regulating time constant and switches it to ramp up to command so it doesn't shoot up too quick
Only one board exists in wire wrap form, so making actual laid out pcbs

They are not charging you that much just because they can. It is certified to meet very specific requirements for clean rooms. Maintaining a certification costs money. Doing all the extra processing to be sure it meets requirements costs money. Inspecting it costs extra money.

Having actually gilded antique woodwork, that is the cheapest gold look paint
Real gilding takes time and prep work and he couldn't stand craftsman being in there the proper amount of time it would take, and he probably couldn't even pick out something done in real 24kt
