PLN resources for elementary math educators, as compiled by Spring 2025 EDUC 376 students at UMass Amherst
This tool gives feedback on answers both right and wrong in order for students to realize their mistakes. The immediate feedback also provides encouragement to keep going. Definitely make time to check it out! #education #mathteacher

We would recommend that other educators use this tool. It is great for encouraging students to learn math while completing fun and exciting exercises. They have exercises for children ages 6-12 and a variety for each age group to choose from.

One teacher on X posted and said quote “If you haven’t heard about exploding dots, it’s so great for reinforcing place value skills.” (@MrsCousins5) #mathdigitaltools #Bluesky

Teachers are also able to track their students' progress while they are using Buzzmath! Some things educators have had to say about this tool is how beneficial the activities are for reinforcing concepts.

I would definitely recommend this tool to other educators. It is a reliable website that helps organize its own games to make it accessible for both teachers and students.

This organization helps teachers and tutors to find the games most appropriate for their students but with the added benefit that all the games share a similar structure that once a student learns one game, they should be able to easily figure out the functions of the other games.

As far as organization, within the website, the games are tools themselves that are divided into helpful categories. A teacher can both filter the games by grade level as well as choose a main topic such as “Logic”, “Story”, or “Multiplayer.”
March 3, 2025 at 3:36 AM
Articles seem to also view Math Playground as a great tool for teaching math. For example, LingoAce Team posted it in the “Best 10 Online Math Sources for Kids in the US in 2024” and MakeUseOf posted it in “8 Fun Websites to Help Kids Learn.”

One of the unique features of this website is its games that can be multiplayer. Since the website doesn’t require a log-in, this means it can be an accessible tool for students to collaborate in classrooms and tutoring settings.

Overall, Reddit is a helpful resource because of the amount of reach and variety it has. It does have its downfalls in the ways most social media sites do, but it is simple enough to tailor your experience to avoid these things. (7/7)

r/matheducation seems to be rather US-centric, but there are international users on Reddit as a whole, so you are likely to find many varied experiences across other forums on the site. The search feature is helpful for finding specific topics. (6/7)

We recommend using the block feature on this website liberally to tailor your experience - Don't feed the trolls, as they say. (5/7)

The comment sections of posts can become useful discussions or sometimes petty arguments, as is unfortunately common with largely public social media platforms. This does however mean that users are expressing several different opinions and viewpoints. (4/7)
March 3, 2025 at 3:26 AM
The primary users of this forum are of course educators, but the occasional post from a prospective educator or student does come up as well. (3/7)
March 3, 2025 at 3:26 AM
The particular forum that we explored for our project is r/matheducation. Commonly posted in this forum are questions, advice, and anecdotes from math educators at levels from K-12 and beyond. Users also frequently share tools that they have found useful to their education repertoire. (2/7)

However, we recognize this social media platform as a low-stress environment for educators to share their teaching “secrets” and also ask for advice from their fellow educators. #elementarymath #BlueSky

Although we do recommend BlueSky as a tool for current and prospective educators, the app seems to be U.S. centered and lacks global voices compared to other social media platforms.

One hashtag that was centered solely on elementary math was #ElemMathChat. This hashtag seemed to be more informal conversation based with discussing student errors and issues in the education system. Similarly to #iTeachMath, resources were shared and example problems were shown by educators.
March 3, 2025 at 12:49 AM
Even the users themselves created tools for other educators by uploading videos specifically to the hashtag to show the "why" behind math and the process behind the “new” ways of math.
March 3, 2025 at 12:49 AM
One of the most active hashtags that included users seeking elementary math information was #iTeachMath. Within this hashtag, various digital tools and apps were shared as resources for teaching elementary math such as activities from “Resourcehaholic” and education centered articles.
March 3, 2025 at 12:49 AM
There were a mixture of both similar and contradicting opinions in the comments, but there also seemed to be an understanding in differing opinions.
March 3, 2025 at 12:49 AM
We found posts within the elementary math field were often sharing resources whether their own or other people’s, as well as promoting events and further outreach programs. Posts were also made to ask questions and facilitate conversations for other educators to share their opinions.
