These are are not common, mixed use building spaces are very uncommon. because of firecode fire code here in the west does not allow two different fire code required spaces to operate in the same building typically
As for community with neighbors I'm saying there should be communal space to do so.

I grew up in some really weird living situations growing up, a communal outhouse isn't too bad honestly, shared between 7-10 families as long as theirs basic decorum and community centered beliefs (and a strict cleaning schedule)

Thats not a good thing, especially when we build massive buildings with essentially no community support within. Buildings taller than 10 stories are significantly less efficient than buildings of exactly 10 stories, and the idea of a housing structure with no concern of grocery is... ridiculous

Apartment buildings are actually quite far from a long house, the sheer number of families chocked into one building alone, not to mention the practical design being based entirely on communal segregation instead of community
