I refuse to believe that in order to battle capitalism, I have to endorse awful tech, especially since its roll out, being deployed while the amount of harm it does massively outweighs the miniscule good on the premise that it will eventually make All The Money, is inextricably linked to capitalism.

Yeah I'm aware of what Marx wrote, but I'm not sure what your point is. Capitalism will accelerate inequality so...what? We just go "Ah well, nothing to be done"? If anything that seems like an even better reason to push back: If we don't stop it, the next step will be worse.

At this point ChatGPT sounds like the least subtle satire of capitalism.

The gains from ai are always in the nebulous future, when ai stops looking like it does now and gains a bunch of features that aren't really plausible, when the rapture happens and your dad comes back from getting cigarettes and we all get a fucking pony.

The damage AI is doing, the skyrocketing energy costs, the vulnerable people goaded into psychosis and self harm, the very real collapse of our information landscape, these are not hypotheticals. They are real, and happening right now. You can see them in the news.

I said a few hours ago that the current mainstream opinion in British politics and law is that any crime is legal so long as the victim is transgender, and I cannot see any way it gets out of it without a major purge of both its journalist and political classes.
