Lovely New York Aster (Symphyotrichum novi-belgii)! It is a species name. I think the flowers look like a purple Erigeron (fleebane daisy).

That's a Red Admiral Butterfly, and my guess on the other is some sort of Fritillary. Do you know? So cool!
elisnativeplants.bsky.social
The stems are about 4’ long and they grew in a dense clump then sprawled out. So yeah, a large meadow herb that holds its own with the Goldenrods and Joe Pyes of a wet New England meadow. Prone to flopping when grown in isolation.

I love that you've made your page name about your ecosytem. Very cool way to get the word out and build connection on ecology. I'll make sure to coax rather than herd, as I think the idea of being able to scroll your ecology in season will be tempting.

I was thinking of level IV, e.g. I'm in # ecoregion59, the Northeast Coastal Zone. But feel free to choose your range! E.g. I could say I'm in 59h, the Gulf of Maine Coastal Plain. But I'd like to build ecological community on all levels. Maybe use whatever level you can ask a friend to join in on.

Thank you for looking into it! I made a post with some links just now, but you have it; it would be # ecoregion65 or 65n, depending on how specific you wanted to be. If you know others in your area you could ask them to tag it too! I was thinking it would help us to build ecological community.

I like the foliage on those purple dome asters. And the flowers sure are impressive this year. I'll bet they are gonna keep showing up for you. Our frost asters took multiple years, but many other asters took off immediately.

Hope you have fun with the ecoregion #! Thanks for trying it!

Feel free to ask me the ecoregion of a city or town. I can convert it to a shorter hashtag by EPA classification. You can pick more precise ecological classifications like I could say New Haven CT is in the Long Island Sound Coastal Lowland, ecoregion 59g.

Wouldn't it be cool to scroll your local ecosystem - seasonal #nativeplants info? I started #ecoregion59 with @jp0610.bsky.social so you can see at least our perspectives on the Northeastern Coastal Zone.

I was not trying to be critical of you. I was just making a request to share something I'm having fun with, that I see potential in, as a useful tool to get people to learn about their local ecosystems. I appreciate your posts and won't mention use of # again here.

Wow, I've only seen A. melanocarpa and I imagined a much duller red for A. arbutifolia.

Would you consider tagging your ecoregion sometimes? I think it would be great to be able to scroll on our own ecologies and see what we could find. I've been working on # ecoregion59 with a plant friend.

That's a great shot! New England Asters?

Great post! I am so enamored with our diversity of Symphyotrichum and Gaylussacia.

Lovely! I've gotta geta native Liatris. I wonder if they have a lot of visitor overlap with Cirsium.

Lovely! A new favorite of mine: they volunteered in the native tea herb section by Licorice Goldenrod.

Lovely! All of the out bees seem to be in the asters (in Middlesex Cty, MA).

It's Aster season! American asters (genus Symphyotrichum) are diverse and ubiquitous. Take a closer look and I bet you'll find some new-to-you species you've been walking by. My favorite Disney quote: "Look harder" -Rafiki

#nativeplants #bloomscrolling #fallflowers #ecoregion59
Aromatic asters (S. oblongifolium) look like New England Aster from afar, but have less pink in the blooms (they are lavender), and smell like balsam when you crush the foliage. They have oblong leaves, as suggested by the Latin name, and the foliage makes patterns that are very distinct from other asters. Frost Aster (S. pilosum) have tiny hairs all over then, that makes the foliage look frosted. They are prolific bloomers that handle dry sites in old fields very well. Ours are dripping with bees, bumble, honey, and Halictid Heart-leaved Aster (S. cordifolium) line woods edges, look skinny and small throughout spring and summer, then fill out to bloom profusely in the fall. These plants by the woods in our habitat are shimmering with bees and wasps, with half the flowers shaking from a recent landing or departure

I doubt he's going to do anything that will prevent small farms from going under so his corporate buddies can buy their land on the cheap. I'll bet the bailout will be tailored to go almost entirely to large corporate agriculture.

What is occurring in America, the testing of our democracy, the
weaponization of troops against the American people is the fault of these 6 justices:

After the Trump regime’s invasion of an apartment building in Chicago earlier this week, all Americans should brush up on their 4th Amendment rights.

Do not look away. This is what devastation sounds like. I worked with some of USAID’s brightest, including many with disabilities, who built hope from nothing. That hope is shattered. The inhumanity of this regime is unforgivable.

Some Purplestem Asters volunteered? I probably dropped seed uphill, and they wound up right by the road. I'll move them somewhere with moist soil where they won't block the view of incoming traffic, but I couldn't bring myself to move them in the growing season.

#nativeplants #ecoregion59
Purplestem Aster (Symphyotrichum punicium) flowers with lavender petals (ray florets) and disc florets that are bright yellow when unpollinated and rusty red when pollinated. Purplestem Aster fliwering in front of the retaining wall 4' from the curb in our front yard.

That's wonderful! You can make a huge impact with 7 acres! We have 3/4 of an acre and are lucky to be by a conservation area, so as soon as we grew some native habitat, we were buzzing with bumbles and dragonflies. We host so much life here that wasn't present 3 years ago.

I've been saying it for a decade now, and I'm looking forward to the day. I WILL piss on that grave before I die.
