I asked an official from the treasurer’s office to comment on how difficult life is for regular people and how the crypto industry would help. He wore starched jeans with a crease pressed down the middle. Billionaires are fine with people coming over the pass from Idaho to work, but they don’t want them living here, so they make sure to buy up as much land as possible and keep rents high. That way, poor people will be locked out, and there will be no slums in Jackson. He wanted that off the record, but I did not agree to that, and instead wrote down what he said and asked workers about it. One person shook his head in disbelief when I did and said they’d like to take the official to some trailer parks in Jackson. They added that they were “not impressed, nor am I convinced” that Wyoming has any intention of sharing any crypto industry gains with regular people. “It seems like glorified gambling to me.”

i've been reseraching & writing about leasing lately, and I don't think folks realize just how much of capex / global infrastructure is leased rather than owned
Another troubling point is that big tech doesn’t just buy data centers and then use them, but in many cases pays a construction company to build them, fills them with GPUs and then leases them from a company that runs them, meaning that they don’t have to personally staff up and maintain them. This creates an economic boom for construction companies in the short term, as well as lucrative contracts for ongoing support…as long as the company in question still wants them. While Microsoft or Amazon might use a data center and, indeed, act as if it owns it, ultimately somebody else is holding the bag and the ultimate responsibility for the data centers.
