The Armaztsikhe-Bagineti archaeological site is an ancient religious and royal site dating back to 4 BCE. One of the most curious aspects was a statue base which once held a massive bronze statue of Armazi, the Georgian sun god. #georgia #archaeologicalsite

It's been too long since I was in Peru, and next time I go back, this spot is on my list: Huacachina. It's an oasis town in the middle of the southern Peruvian desert, and sandboarding on the colossal dunes is on offer every day. #peru #sandboarding #ica #huacachina

Every year, Tbilisi's grey, Soviet-era apartment buildings get a glow-up in the form of murals, transforming the skyline into colossal works of art. I interviewed the director of the Tbilisi Mural Festival and learned about a piece in progress at the Avlabari Metro Station. #streetart #tbilisi

Abandoned Soviet airfields and off-the-grid trekking

This weekend, I totally unplugged and spent three days at Vashlovani National Park and Big Shiraki Airfield. No phones, no distractions, just miles of fabulous trekking and camping out under the stars. #trekking #georgia #camping

I went foraging for wild mushrooms in Georgia recently, and learned so much about the fabulous fungi on offer in this country. My interview with Nika the Mushroom Man is featured in the next AMCHAM magazine, and I hope to hit the forest with him again soon. #mushrooms #georgia #foraging

Didgori Battle Monument in Didgori, Georgia. On August 12, 1121, King David triumphed over the far larger Seljuk Empire, and it's one of the most significant victories in Georgian history. You can visit the battlefield today, but the fog is not always included. #didgori #georgia #history

Rainy day here in Tbilisi, and I think Dink has the right idea. Sprawl it out and nap it out. #cats #georgia

It's impossible to avoid art in Tbilisi, like this giant mural I saw on the way to the gym. #streetart #tbilisi #georgia

Giant street art in Tbilisi, Georgia. Are these zebras sparring? Kissing? Either way, it's glorious. #tbilisi #georgia #streetart

Ominous clouds descending on my trek around Abudelauri to see the famous white, blue, and green lakes near the Chiukhi glacier. It was some varsity-level hiking, although not technical, with incredible views, especially from the white lake. This is why I love Georgia. #hiking #georgia

Tbilisi is a city that loves its cats. From Goshaart's winged silhouettes to massive murals, homages to these magnificent creatures are around every corner. This is the Namaste Hotel in Old Town, decorated with a giant, wide-eyed void cat. #tbilisi #streetart #cats

This magnificent cat, and my unofficial assistant (paid in belly rubs and treats), hopes you have a productive and lovely day today!

Go to the southern edge of Lagos, Portugal, and you'll reach Ponta da Piedade- a glorious collection of rock formations and clear teal waters that's perfect for exploring by kayak #lagos #portugal #seakayak

I'm back to work after a busy two weeks in Portugal, Spain, and Morocco. This is Ait Ben Haddou, a desert town about 4 hours from Marrakesh. I ate a delicious tagine here, bought a painting, and got this great picture, with a bonus cat cameo. #morocco

While working on some pieces about Svaneti, I came across this picture. It's me, crossing the Adishchala River on horseback. Braver and more sure-footed hikers crossed the glacially fed river on foot, but I saw too many hiking poles washed downstream, so I went this way. #svaneti #adishi #glacier

Svaneti is a uniquely beautiful place.

This is the 9th-century Lamaria church in Ushguli, Svaneti. Ushguli is one of the highest-elevation communities in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage site overlooking the magnificent Upper Caucasus. #georgia #svaneti #hiking #trekking #history

Mika with her chichilaki. Georgians burn chichilakis on January 19th to ring out the end of the previous year and welcome a brand new year. It's one of my favorite parts of the year here in Georgia. #chichilaki #newyear #georgia

Weary Lora turtles emerge from the sea on Playa Ostional, Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica. For sea turtles like this one, the arribada is crucial to the species' survival. It's a numbers game. Of the thousands of eggs laid, only a handful survive. #turtles #costarica #ostional

I miss the Andes mountains today, especially the Bolivian giants looming high over La Paz. This is what the high camp at Huayna Potosi looks like. The accommodations are humble, but the views and fresh air are epic. #andes #mountain #trekking
