Yesterday, he was listening to the funeral of Pope Francis as I was selecting frames. I shared my condolences and said that the Pope had always seemed to be a good man. He replied, “Yes, I know that he is going to Heaven. But you know who had to make the funeral about him? Trump.”

When I need new glasses, I buy them from a lovely Italian man in Brooklyn who gently advises me on the right frames for my face and takes careful measurements to make sure I can actually see. From our conversations over the years, I’ve thought of him as politically conservative.
