Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

The United States by virtue of a bipartisan commitment to biomedical research created one of the most vibrant, productive research ecosytems in the world. People came from all over to study here, do research here. It was a monumental accomplishment by both parties. 1/

Musk's claim that just 10% of US aid reaches recipients is absurd. @cgdev lays out the facts:
- US gov costs are just 10%
- Rest reaches recipients mostly thru US corps/nonprofits + multilateral agencies
- ~10% goes thru foreign organizations

No, 90 Percent of Aid Is Not Skimmed Off Before Reaching Target Communities
A viral claim, spread and amplified by Elon Musk, suggests that only 10 percent of USAID money reaches its intended beneficiaries. This is a wildly incorrect and misleading interpretation of a differe...

The thread below is about federal datasets that have been taken down. Some websites say they are down for “maintenance” and others are not explained.

We @kff.org had downloaded most of these files on our servers and will be able to see what, if anything, is changed if/when the data come back online
CDC's Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) -- which, since 1990, has tracked high school students' behaviors that can influence health and social outcomes (like smoking, drug use, and dietary habits) -- is now offline

With a book project done (though many related tasks keep churning along), I'm turning to something I've been passionate about for a long time, encouraging people to grow some of their own food in regenerative gardens. I'm promoting collaborative gardening and networks of gardeners who share.

I recently finished a massive project, co-authoring with David Kotok and others a study of the economic and societal impacts of pandemics. The book is The Fed and the Flu: Parsing Pandemic Economic Shocks.

You've probaly seen various headlines this year about bird flu and the potential for a new pandemic.

So I've written a new substack as a simple explainer on what a flu pandemic actually is, why bird flu and what's been going on over the last 3 years.

How close is a new bird flu (H5N1) pandemic?
