Life thrives after ice; have faith in the thaw. Ice ages come and go. Milankovitch Cycles, oscillations of 100,000 years show life has a rhythm, and this world is warming up. Have hope for the warmth of your fire. Trust ice will melt in due time. ❄️ 🔥

Is it queer nihilism, YOLO, millennial sleaze? Maybe it’s Maybelline, joie de vivre, HRT? Different ways to be me, different you’s to choose, too. They’ll go to war either way — plant peace, and be true.

Can’t stop the world from spinning out of control, but can find fascination and solace in the unbuilt planet. Pictographs and petroglyphs paint these pictured rocks, 800-1000 years old, before the world knew the lights of cities. We were lucky to find joy in the living memory of these mountains.

Optimism for the new year. Hope is a river that wears down the rocks of despair. Here’s to a brighter year for all of us. 2025 definitely aged me a few years but gave me appreciation for the seasonality of life. I have faith brighter times are around the bend.

Home can be an elusive feeling. Past and present, bitter and sweet wash on the same shores. Back in my birthplace for 9 days, the longest I’ll have been in the 805 since 2020. Sometimes grief hangs like a uvula behind my words, unseen but felt. But love is the glue that holds it together.

My friend and neighbor Doug is passing away at 83 today. He was a deeply peaceful and poetic soul who loved his dog Sarah. He cherished his Mojave home and greeted the sunrise with joy. It was a blessing and an honor to befriend him in his last year of life and to be there for him til the end.

Good news! The new Desert Times curated and published by Riah Buchanan is out and available at Hi Desert Times. I’m lucky to be included alongside other desert creators. I’m glad to commemorate my friend Agne through creativity, I think that’s how she would want to be remembered.

Exploring near Sedona with my friend Jack. We former rangers may know something about seasonality. Roles in life come and go, dreams dissolve to the tune of others’ budgets, nothing stays fixed forever. It’s good to share the beautiful moments with friends, whether for a short time or a long time.

How lucky we are to be travelers, strangers in communion with time and the spirits of the past! We woke with the hummingbirds and herons at Burro Creek, connected with conifers outside Prescott, sipped old fashions at the oldest saloon in the state, and gathered with the ghosts at a haunted hotel!

Sometimes I fear I’ll never know who I really am or could be because I’ve spent so much life living up to who I’m expected to be.

Yesterday morning my 82 year old veteran neighbor reached for my hand from his hospital bed, and in the afternoon a kindergartner reached for my hand because she was scared to talk in front of the class. In the beginning, in the end, we all need someone to be there for us, someone to hold our hand.

We are America too! Trans, 2spirit, nonbinary, intersex, gender diverse people have helped shape this country before it was a country. Love us or hate us, we are its history too.

I was very lucky to interview the great Sarah McLachlan for Bust! With so much animosity in the world, it was a true honor to talk to someone dedicated to uplifting women and helping pioneer a gentler way forward.
