On the value of taking notes by hand, something I am going to start emphasizing to students. You can take notes by hand now & convert them to digital later. Not only is it better to take notes by hand than to type them, but it offers fewer distractions.

Doctor-prisoner roll call at Buchenwald, where kapo Ernst Busse, a German communist held since 1938, reads a list of rules. Many French doctor-prisoners wrote postwar that he helped them survive. In 1951 he was invited to the URSS and disappeared. Sketch from the Buchenwald Memorial.
