In the Tāmaki Makaurau byelection, TPM candidate Kaipara was able to retain 60% of the votes her predecessor received in 2023. Labour's Henare was only able to retain 31% of his voters.

Labour will hope that the lack of enthusiasm demonstrated in this byelection is not reflective of a trend.

We are still nowhere near recovering from the historic fall in union membership caused by the anti-union laws of 1991.

However, the increase in union membership among younger workers means that union density recently reached a 15-year high. [3/4]

This increase has driven a smaller increase in overall union density. The 25-34 age group is where union membership is growing fastest. [2/4]

Good news! NZ union density has been steadily increasing among workers aged 15-44 for the last 9 years, and increased significantly in the year after the Coalition took power in 2023. [1/4]
