I’ve always felt that Wilder’s great movies are so good because (without the stories needing any sequel) they make me think of the lives the characters have afterwards. Like, I can imagine Sefton’s post war life, just like I know C.C Baxter and Fran will have a long, happy marriage.

For all the mouthing off universities do about being some kind of force for societal good they only ultimately have as much or as little integrity as the decision makers who run them; which seems to be very little if this story is accurate.

They’ve been killed by their own chaos and the Greens moving onto the space they might have occupied. It’s irretrievable now.

If you depend on income derived from your work to live then you’re working class. Whether you prefer watching Shakespeare plays or going to bingo isn’t relevant; ‘working class’ is an economic category and nothing to do with cultural capital (which is, anyway, a subjective and nebulous concept).

Education and expertise are valuable things but the regressive media, which is a hand in glove ally of regressive politicians, know that stupidity in sufficient quantity is also a valuable asset. It’s a kind of ballast, a brute weight that can be wielded to make previously unthinkable things happen
