I have a hard time imagining this. You might be right, but I suspect the roots here are deeper than that.

For whatever it's worth, I live in the southeast US, and I am SURROUNDED by people like you describe. They'd give the shirt off their back to help an individual or family, but strongly desire to kick all strangers out of the country and they don't care to where. I desperately want to understand it.

It is also true of course that outlets like Fox are beating the "the weird foreigners and commie leftists are trying to kill us all, we must get them first" drums in their faces every single day without rest. It is comically obvious propaganda, but propaganda works.

I think that impulse is stronger, and subject to less restraint, in folks that are naturally drawn to the right.

It's hard to capture the whole picture in a one line summary. But I don't think we're talking about completely different things. They have come to trust Fox News partly because Fox appeals to the part of their brains that constantly looks for threats.

I think it’s a common trait among people that lean right that a person they know is good; people they don’t know are bad. It’s some kind of tribal instinct they won’t acknowledge and can’t get past.

I actually thought that's what it said at first glance. The name is so close it's hard to believe anybody with any branding experience at all would have approved it, particularly given what the company actually does.
