Chanticleer is a literary rooster who, along with his wife, Partlet (Pertelote), appears variously in the cycle of fables about Reynard the Fox, Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales, and the collected tales of the Brothers Grimm.

The rooster faces right and is slightly bowed as it appears to be scratching in the grass. The piece is photographed with a penny and the traditional Chinese brush used to draw it. The penny could obscure most of the rooster's head and neck.
