The state of the world has driven me to drink.... Trying to stick more to beer here, but we'll see how that goes.

Yeah, it's surprisingly widely available. And a source of Fullers production yeast of course, making it about the cheapest source of good brewing yeast anywhere, even after including the price of some DME to grow it up in.

Is it Memel oak though?

Go Stoke-Mex, use Staffordshire oat cakes...

Sesame is closely related to Acanthus, and a cousin of things like verbenas, foxgloves and mints.

Foxglove is perhaps the best UK equivalent for the flowers.

Group of voodoo surely?

And theoretically a quarter final with England is possible....

Trouble is that US doesn't really have an equivalent of British "supermarket shite" bread, their cheap supermarket bread is so, so much worse (and still twice the price of the UK), then they largely miss out the middle ground and have super-fancy stuff at the top end.

Don't really do bacon either.
December 5, 2025 at 8:48 PM
Hmm - the Amazon reviews and Untapped (don't think I've ever seen something as low as 1.71) suggest you're being kind.

As for 'glow-friendly', WTF?
December 4, 2025 at 6:53 PM
Suspect the writers of the Gospels considerably outscore Shakespeare on that front ...

Certainly on Venus....

The Abu Dhabi 1GW baseload station under construction is 5.2 GW solar plus 19 GWh battery - but that's in the Gulf where they have twice the sunlight of the UK, it's reliable, and demand (driven by aircon) that's a much better match to solar generation.

Need more intermittency protection in UK.

How would it work where there is no European alternative, like if the RAF wanted a squadron of heavy bombers? Only realistic option would be the American B-21, it would be nonsensical to spread multi-£10bn's R&D costs of an all-new UK design over a dozen planes.

HMG's view on his existence is FOIable though, the kids could go for that.

Not sure you'd want to nationalise him though, seems to be doing a pretty efficient job as it is.
December 3, 2025 at 12:55 PM
It's a slippery slope though.

What happens when kids, emboldened with new knowledge of their data rights, start making Freedom of Information requests for what the government know about the existence of Santa?

Do elves have employment rights?

Are elves paid living wage?

As I say, slippery slope.
December 2, 2025 at 11:57 PM
It's more complex than that - a big difference is the availability of capital to improve reliability and attract passengers which means more profit, versus the Treasury saying no to everything.

See this from the boss of East Coast whilst it was nationalised :

Nationalisation: “a dead-end argument”
MICHAEL HOLDEN explains why he believes a fully public railway won’t work, drawing on his experience as chairman of the Government-run East Coast service

There certainly used to be a chapel on the third floor of Lakeside, near London - it seems to have become a "reflection room".

There's also a niche subgenre of British shopping centres incorporating bits of old church/chapel, like Stafford's Guildhall:

A Piece of the Past: The History of Stafford’s Chapel Tower
If you've ever wandered through the Guildhall Shopping Centre in Stafford, you might have noticed a curious tower standing tall amidst the modern structures. It's easy to pass by without a second thou...

So eg :

Boggerton Utd are winning 2-0
Boggerton plc is reporting its first half results this week.

One exception is "the police", who tend to be plural on both sides of the Atlantic.

It's one of those differences between US & British English - the US treats almost all collective nouns as singular, whereas British English generally treats them as plural if the individuals are in any way "visible" (like a sports team) but singular if the organisation is more amorphous/remote. 1/2

Not just once upon a time - Cloudwater were certainly doing it pre-pandemic, but then they probably took more care of their yeast than most.

I have used Marmite as supplement in an apple juice starter before now - not ideal because of the salt, but it works.

Nothing will happen, our regulators are toothless.
November 19, 2025 at 11:41 AM
Common misspelling - it's actually partisalad.

Like a partigyle, but for salad.
