You can tell where my fatigue-meter is bc one end is marked "actively engaged in fascinating artistic thought-experiments" and the other end is marked "drinking endless tropes because they require no thought only emotional tides washing over my exhausted psyche"

What’s the word where you’re from that, when pronounced exactly as it looks, identifies a tourist immediately?

It's still a very pretty bird you saw then :)

Did you take that? It's beautiful!!! 🤩

It's like watching a fish flop on a deck. Needs to swim. Wants to swim. Distressed by not swimming. Can't actually swim tho.

My brain is so tired today that it can't pick a background noise or a thing to read. Not tired enough not to NEED background noise/book, just tired enough that it can't focus on what I *was* reading and listening to (it's new, it requires active attention) or make a choice of backup familiar options

I've already seen him eat a feather!

kinda sweet that bookshop.org's anti-prime sale overlaps with banned books week, which means today you can get free shipping PLUS 20% off their banned books list! bookshop.org/info/banned-...

Oh, it's Utah, I'm not RECOMMENDING you come here 😂😭😂 although we have a lovely and extremely queer speculative fiction indie bookstore!

Thanks for the info! I might try and bribe my brother into going to a PNW event for me :)

Where do your tours get announced? Not that you're likely to come here (nobody does) but sometimes I can manage to slide sideways into a state that's less of a nightmare!

if by normal you mean i know how to filter my porn by ship/rating/length/kink and promptly download everything to my kindle named after a character in said porn, then absolutely yes

“can people be normal on ao3?” no. that’s quite literally the point. that website was created specifically to give freaks who like freaky shit a place to publish their works. if freaks liking freaky shit makes you uncomfortable, you can choose a different website.

...yeah, no, she realizes the murder was committed by the victim's best friend, is horrified, there's a paragraph mentioning that she "talked to them about it", all is resolved the end

...I wanted to shake somebody.
elucreh.bsky.social
That's interesting! It's an important fight! That needs to happen! You've spent all book letting it happen, building to the real conversation that lays groundwork for moving forward!
elucreh.bsky.social
Your best friend! That you know best of anyone in the world! And now she has a partner you're also a good friend of! But you're trying to adjust, trying to find the balance of someone else being more important, trying to let them find ways to support even when you know what they're doing won't work
elucreh.bsky.social
That mirrored some of the tensions that were part of the case. Not...SUPER competently, mostly just people getting stressed and snapping exactly the correct wording for their issues like THAT'S how it works EITHER, but at least digging into the core relationship at the center of the books
elucreh.bsky.social
A) that's not how people work, you don't just bring stuff out in the open, tada, now you're cured

B) that's not super interesting to read once you're into "everything is resolved"

And this last book in the series was actually doing some interesting interpersonal stuff
elucreh.bsky.social
And those lives should be interesting and complicated and contain characters that are PEOPLE.

I think maybe it's because we try so hard to be, like, making cozies safe spaces? But if everyone has had an adult conversation about their trauma and then healed from it and moved on, like...
elucreh.bsky.social
The Southern Sisters mystery books absolutely read like they were written by a white Southern woman in her sixties in 1994, but she UNDERSTANDS that in ways that I have yet to find in any other series. Your characters should be actual people who live lives as well as investigating
elucreh.bsky.social
They should weave in and out of each other, intersecting at points that build the drama and suspense (and lead to reveals that are helpful, with luck in both directions) and possibly even, if you're very good at it, also have thematic relevance, mirroring, foils, etc
elucreh.bsky.social
This is sort of the opposite? Like.Ok, I got a hobbyhorse, sorry about the saddle: the thing about a cozy mystery is, right, that you have to use the personal tension to do a Hitchcock bomb doesn't go off thing on the mystery, but also vice versa! There's a BALANCE. You're telling at least 2 stories
elucreh.bsky.social
I keep picking them up bc fluff is part of my balanced media diet, but this last one was kind of like...right on the edge of not bothering on the next one :/
elucreh.bsky.social
Yeah, they're cute but veeeery fluff. And sadly, imho, they're sliding into the trap of many cozy series, where they settle the interpersonal conflicts that make up the balance of tension and are left with coasting on charm and standard mystery solving.

why does the library have books 1, 2, and 4 of this series

is it to hurt me personally
