That's interesting! It's an important fight! That needs to happen! You've spent all book letting it happen, building to the real conversation that lays groundwork for moving forward!

But you're trying to adjust, trying to find the balance of someone else being more important, trying to let them find ways to support even when you know what they're doing won't work

That mirrored some of the tensions that were part of the case. Not...SUPER competently, mostly just people getting stressed and snapping exactly the correct wording for their issues like THAT'S how it works EITHER, but at least digging into the core relationship at the center of the books

A) that's not how people work, you don't just bring stuff out in the open, tada, now you're cured

B) that's not super interesting to read once you're into "everything is resolved"

And this last book in the series was actually doing some interesting interpersonal stuff

And those lives should be interesting and complicated and contain characters that are PEOPLE.

I think maybe it's because we try so hard to be, like,making cozies safe spaces? But if everyone has had an adult conversation about their trauma and then healed from it and moved on, like...

The Southern Sisters mystery books absolutely read like they were written by a white Southern woman in her sixties in 1994, but she UNDERSTANDS that in ways that I have yet to find in any other series. Your characters should be actual people who live lives as well as investigating

They should weave in and out of each other, intersecting at points that build the drama and suspense (and lead to reveals that are helpful, with luck in both directions) and possibly even, if you're very good at it, also have thematic relevance, mirroring, foils, etc

This is sort of the opposite? Like.Ok, I got a hobbyhorse, sorry about the saddle: the thing about a cozy mystery is, right, that you have to use the personal tension to do a Hitchcock bomb doesn't go off thing on the mystery, but also vice versa! There's a BALANCE. You're telling at least 2 stories

Yeah, they're cute but veeeery fluff. And sadly, imho, they're sliding into the trap of many cozy series, where they settle the interpersonal conflicts that make up the balance of tension and are left with coasting on charm and standard mystery solving.
