Former educator, prof, and national nonprofit director. Retired, married, dog lover. Pro-democracy; anti-oligarchy; pretty damn pissed off right now. Trust me, folks, it’s really not fun to live under fascism. Also at Threads as "elyseea". No DMs.💙🇺🇦🇨🇦🇬🇱🇲🇽

Axios has this chart of state responses to defunding SNAP. (Don't forget, though, the court case about using the emergency funds at the last minute.)

Hat tip to all for folks who, way back at the start of the Patriot Act, cautioned that one day the surveillance state could be turned on Americans. No hat tip for the folks who accused them of hysteria and paranoia. Text from Parnas:

Meanwhile, back at the intersection of tech bros and MAGA government, we have this sort of thing going on. (from Parnass, but reported in various places). Our tax monies at work.

So proud of California for enacting citizen redistricting. It should be adopted in all 50 states. But the most important thing is protecting democracy and the right to vote, or else citizen redistricting means nothing. So here are two more votes for Yes on 50.

And recalling the issue for the Hunter-concerned folks was that he was on the board of a company who would benefit from "access" to Dad, they should also be concerned about this item, reported by the WSJ and summarized via Bulwark's Morning Shots:

I'm not sure why so much of America is a-okay with posts like this from our government. Here is DHS taking a bead on Chicago -- not criminals, but the city itself. It couldn't be clearer.

Under 287(g), ICE signs what it calls “Memorandums of Agreement” (MOAs) with local law enforcement agencies. Once that happens, local officers are “trained” by ICE, usually a short course, sometimes just a few weeks, and granted limited authority to perform immigration enforcement functions.

Sarah Longwell has some advice for talking about the shutdown. Yes, we want to save healthcare, but it's bigger than that. It's about the corruption of this whole administration:

Elsewhere, I've blogged about the growing "snitch culture" that state and federal agencies have put in place for 'culture war" violations. This has been around for a few years for teachers, but here is the latest. "Eyes on Education" portal, geez:

If you care about maternal health, and we all should, this report about care deserts is important. Once subsidies and Medicaid are removed, care deserts will only grow -- particularly in rural places. Red States, wake up.

I continue to be amazed that despite a level of interference in the internal workings of our largest corporations that would make previous business leaders scream foul, the business community still is willing to support this administration. Did they want to get rid of DEI all along? 🤷‍♀️

The data are clear. We are not focusing on criminals or public safety; we are pursuing full-on removal with no particular priorities other than the 3,000 target.

The Medicaid cuts won't hit till after the election, but we will see the effects on ACA prices earlier than that. This is from KFF via Aaron Parnas:

The news about us incinerating food aid, already bought/stored in Dubai, rather than getting it to starving children, is emblematic of this admin. Soon, the GOP will move on a recession package to take back funding already budgeted and committed. It is all about destruction. Good time to make calls.

We know from the big numbers that inflation is up, but that's different from seeing it in everyday costs. These last couple of weeks, my grocery bill has really gone up. And the tariffs and labor shortages haven't hit yet. I'm ready to start putting those Trump "I did that" stickers on stuff again.

Once again, the Supreme Court delivers problematic news. Unclear at this point what the implications will be for local districts, and of course for families, who count on federal education support and funding.
