This suggests there is a link between energetically expensive large brains and the composition of the gut microbiome.

Importantly, gut microbes from larger-brained primates (humans and squirrel monkeys) induced metabolic changes consistent with higher energy needs, but gut microbes from smaller-brained primates (macaques) resulted in increased adipose tissue.
