When your kids are in elementary school and you have a day off, don’t tell THEM. Once, I took my birthday off and my daughter who was in second grade at the time faked being sick so she could spend time with me which was super sweet, but … so I made her stay in bed with me while I wrote AS PLANNED

Similarly, for writers specifically, I think programs/fellowships/etc need to stop using number of books published as the primary/only marker of being "established" or worthy of support. There are other ways to measure a writer's progression in the craft.
