Wait please explain this, I've been so curious about the Japanese in that scene because "girlfriend" in English used by another woman usually did mean just friends in the '80s but I have no idea what she actually said.

Also possible that it wasn't a favorite for either of them before. Hayato or some Karaba non-combat staffperson might have selected it, and Amuro eats whatever's put in his hand so why not drink the same way? Now they both just associate it with each other.

Also worth noting that in 0079 he is only BARELY legal drinking age and likely wouldn't have had time to develop a sophisticated palate for alcohol. On the other hand, while stuck on Axis before Zeta, he might not have had much ELSE to do with his time...

That the show did All That and also acknowledged Garma's existence as little as possible (and specifically downplayed his connection to Char by having Char switch him out for Gihren in that one line, as though it's just a cold-blooded quip that doesn't mean anything) isn't a coincidence.

Oh absolutely. Char can drink wine with Challia in a way that appeals to the fujoshi demographic but OBVIOUSLY we're not supposed to take the idea they had anything gay going on SERIOUSLY. Beyond the Time is a love song? What do you mean? It's about time travel and getting hype for big robots.

In one sense, yeah, because as the woman she's expected to sacrifice the most in order to maintain this disaster, but I also think they both just deserve DIFFERENT. They're amazingly incompatible.
