The one thing I love about art, is that you can will something into existence. Flashback to this summer when I made a BJD because I was struggling with poses and my human doll wasn't working for me.

Ball jointed animal figure on a stand with a drawing next to it in the same pose. Animal is lemur/mouse inspired. Made with super sculpey clay, some floral wire and elastic bands. Non-slip pads were added for balance. Stand is upcycled materials.

Reposting a small art tutorial I made for someone asking me how to draw a racoon.
I think this works for any mammal though.

"1. STICK FIGURE - Understanding the animal structure starts with this exercise." Picture of a walking racoon with red lines drawn over it where the bone structure would be. "2. JOINT CONNECTIONS - Joints are just points of movement. It helps with doing shapes/muscles." Picture of raccoon with jointed stick figures drawn over it. Addition: Ball joints are excellent to figure out points of movement, but also posing and proportion. If you are struggling with either of those, try going between this exercise and shapes on top of the joints! "3. SHAPES & CONNECTIONS - Face guide helps finding the snout/eyes. Here's how I use joints. You can draw larger balls if you struggle with the shape of each limb." Picture of a racoon with more detailed shapes drawn over it. Addition: If you are new to art, try figuring out the ball joint support size so when you draw the shape over it includes both fur and muscle. Fur is often very fluffy and round, so you can use more circular lines. As an example, look at a dog/cat that has been bathed and how comedic it looks when they aren't fluffy. You can try drawing that too so understand fur behavior. "4. THE SEGMENTS - You can break down an animal into shape segments to understand movement & posing. I learned this from the director of Brother Bear." A picture of a raccoon with numbered shapes drawn on top. Each segment has it's own unique movement in the group. This is a simplified version of muscles and understanding the gate of an animal. By extension it also helps when drawing their movement in poses, if you know how a torso would behave as an example.
