Hello newcomers! 👋

I'm a historian of the long eighteenth century, writing a book about Marie Antoinette’s ladies in waiting 💃

My last book was about the scandalous c18th Byron dynasty (a prequel to that dastardly poet)

Posting snippets of Georgian-era research as I go… 📜

Continuation of the child's eye view of the French emigration, 1789

Delighted to reveal that:
a) his mum also got chronic diarrhoea
b) then they all went to meet the pope

Just keeping us guessing 200 years later

V. excited to have found a child's diary from 1789, covering the period he & his family fled the French Revolution

... So far it has mostly been 'I am very annoyed about running away!', accompanied with detailed blow by blow accounts of his tutor's unfortunate bouts of diarrhoea #18c

Can’t decide what to buy on Prime Day?

Try: absolutely nothing, and then go support indie bookstores instead 📚

Yep but I figured some might only know him as James I so covered both bases

'The North Wing...built in 1732 to help run the hospital and raise money for it, but fell into decline as the hospital prioritised clinical areas.

Sharing Historic Barts project, external has prepared the building for a new life as a visitor attraction, cultural venue, and commercial events space.'
Hogarth masterpieces restored at Barts Hospital open to public
The restoration of the north wing has 'recaptured its beauty and dignity', the project teams says.

Weird flex but ok dude 👀
Snippet from James Graham's book of 1779, pronouncing, 'I have not got the finest, most complete, and most valuable collection of drawings of diseased eyes, perhaps in the whole world'

Can just imagine him sidling up to the beautiful duchess of Devonshire with that one 😂

Feels a bit early in the day to be posting this, but if I'm spending the morning with 18th-century sex therapist & supposed 'Prince of the Quacks' Dr James Graham then so can you 🍆
Detail from an 18th-century print depicting bewigged James Graham riding astride a large phallic instrument labelled 'Largest in the World' as a little duck says 'quack quack quack' at his feet

It's RIDICULOUS that I've not come across these Listes des Etrangers in Spa before 😍

Lovely to learn where my Byrons stayed in 1765:
🍻Isabella, Lady Carlisle, & two of her daughters
⚔️Elizabeth, Lady Byron & William, 5th Lord Byron, who visited after his murder trial & promptly bought a pet wolf

👗 Fabric samples from Marie Antoinette’s court gowns (grand habits), 1784, preserved by her dame d’atour Geneviève d’Ossun

Mme d’Ossun was charged with bringing the budget for the queen’s wardrobe into line following some seriously extravagant spending by her predecessor in the 1770s 👗

Maybe it's a reflection of the sort of people I'm usually writing about (!) but I have seen it quite a lot!

Is there anything more tantalising than the promise of an early 19th-century letter with the postscript "Burn this immediately"?
