THE INCANDESCENT is a book about money and education and status symbols, about loving your career, about demons, about magic, about fantasy school - but most of all about how 'school' is always a kind of fantasy. Available now!

it’s so my family can bully me about it if I haven’t done any work.

the wordcount goes in there as I work through the week!

the trouble with phone lists is that they live inside the distraction machine so I instantly forget what I was supposed to do. paper works MUCH better for me.

Well now I feel good about myself so thank you 😅

If I do not write out the steps for doing laundry every week and tick each one off then the laundry does not get done. Impressive is one word for it.

Another Monday, another List. This is the only way I ever get anything done.
a long to-do list stuck to a fridge with magnets. It is divided into sections: work, write, TBR, podcast, household, NB, general.

catch me in person with a glass of wine and they will come flooding out

what this leaves: cat pictures, video games, 'hey I wrote a book'. is this suboptimal social media Presence for Marketing: sure is! however it does make me considerably saner.

it's good to have boundaries about what you do and don't post about on the internet. things that are off limits for me: my family, my hater opinions (many), what I'm reading (see above, hater opinions), most personal anecdotes, most politics, nearly all stuff about the process and craft of writing.

but yeah you're right, colleges are the big Insider symbol for Oxbridge, and dark academia as an aesthetic mode is so much ABOUT insider status that omitting them feels very odd.

I think I would go so far as to say we don't need any more Oxford and Cambridge books for now. Surely it's been done to death. Give me something set at the University of Birmingham for once.

(not a random choice - I briefly lived close by and there are so many good buildings.)

We didn't talk about THE INCANDESCENT on Bar Cart Bookshelf, but if you wish to pair it with a cocktail, you can't go wrong with Saffy's favorite: a gin and tonic. Much like a magic school, the G&T is a true classic, and a classic is a classic for a reason!

An utter delight! I gobbled up THE INCANDESCENT last week, charming & insightful, playful in the tradition of the school novel, magic both academic & uncanny, and solidly rooted in the experience of the lead character. A magic school book for grownups without feeling pandering. Read it now!

In my heart there are only two kinds of video game: ‘optimise a spreadsheet’ and ‘git gud’. I am a demon at a spreadsheet game. I have never gotten gud in my entire life. My strategy for Hollow Knight was to fail at bosses in front of my husband so many times that he gently did them for me.

Purchased both Silksong and Hades II today. Excited to be bad at these games.

CHOTINER: And you didn’t know this person - what did you call him again?

CELEBRIMBOR GREATEST OF THE ELVEN SMITHS: Right, his name was Annatar but

CHOTINER: And you taught him to create a ring harnessing all his malice and cruelty?

CELEBRIMBOR: Well I mean I was deceived

CHOTINER: So you’ve said

Chotiner: So you chose to kill your slavewomen as well as the suitors who had taken over your home. Why?

Odysseus: Well, I was in a frenzy understandably, plus they had probably slept with the suitors.

C: Ah. And as slaves did they do this voluntarily?

O: I didn’t ask because

C: They were dead?

Odysseus had his crew lash him to the mast to keep him from doing an interview with Chotiner.
