Former CEO of NGA, just written The Power of Governance to record the changes. For yrs worked in anti-poverty orgs mainly in 3rd sector. Now chair of Action21 local environmental charity, a passion as are books, pictures, theatre, laughs & social justice
The schools minister Georgia Gould MP thanks trustees and school governors #TrusteesWeek

The language of governance being 'overlooked' came from a landmark research report in 2008 and largely applies all these years later. So it's pleasing to see a small acknowledgement from the powers that be

Today David Holdsworth, CEO of the Charity Commission opened #TrusteesWeek beautifully at the Festival of Trusteeship

Trusteeship 'an act of radical optimism'; 'building the infrastructure of a compassionate society'; 'charities are civil society'

Here here. A v positive vision

Great session today at Stratford Literary Festival: Saabira Chaudhuri on Consumed (about the plastic crisis) & Julia Shaw on Green Crime. Holding the big boys to account. And it wasn't all doom & gloom. Looking forward to reading their books & learning more

When I was in charge at NGA, I enjoyed the magazine arriving. Now it's nothing to do with me, it's still fab to see a great new edition #GoverningMatters

It's #VolunteersWeek2025 A good reason to thank citizens giving their time to their communities. I chair a local charity with a fabulous band of volunteers 100% crucial to Action21:
www.action21.co.uk/volunteers

And of course I can't forget 200,000 people who volunteer to govern schools in England

Birmingham Art Gallery: tremendous exhibition, but tomorrow is the last day. Lucky to have caught it today

Great edition of Spring Governing Matters from @ngauk.bsky.social Good to see the board's role in climate action continuing to get profile

this began as an exercise to find a 2016 article in #GoverningMatters: I'm so easily distracted! But here's 14 years of the magazine under my watch: Sam Henson took over 'A word from the editor' in 2021 @ngauk.bsky.social

It's a great recent history of governing schools & trusts in England

Seeing book recommendations here has made me wonder if I will have read a book each month in 2025 that's worth recommending

Here's my best January read: Trespasses by Louise Kennedy

Whoops. It's Alexander McCall Smith. I've read all the series: how could I get the author's name wrong.

Morning. The Wager by David Grann: definitely recommend. I rarely read non-fiction, but this is largely written as tho it's a novel. Wouldn't have picked it up if it hadn't been for bookclub broadening my reading

What an enormous treat: the Van Gogh exhibition at the National Gallery, tickets a Christmas present from the daughter-in-law. Exhilarating & touching exhibition, both familiar & new to me. What a genius Van Gogh was. Feel v lucky to have seen them esp in the company of my loved ones

Didn't expect to be thinking about school governance first thing on Boxing Day but theme of Radio4's Today programme is volunteering. Not CEO of NGA anymore but this message won't ever change. Thanks to all those who volunteer as governors & trustees #r4today

Fabulous James. It has a similar vibe to a print we've just bought: Stone River by Lynne Gougeon
