I painted this view of Sainte-Mont Victoire from the same vantage point Paul Cezanne would climb to from his studio. He painted this view over 70 times in oil and watercolour

I went to visit Cezanne’s painting studio, which has been remarkably left intact. By design, most of the light comes in from a north-facing window, so that the light bounces into the room from the garden. Everything is here as it was, the same ceramic earthenware, even his aprons, hung on the wall.

Scottish painter Jack Vettriano has died at 73. You can’t help but enjoy his romantic compositions, who can forget this one?

another watercolour whilst sailing - here we were heading up the coast in the morning to take part in the Falmouth classics. The boat is a 1910 Fife and we would race her that afternoon.

watercolour is surprisingly a great way to capture life models, you make a simple outline quickly and then allow the paint to flow, making quick gestural strokes and filling the page with colour and texture. It dries quickly and you can take it home, try it!

keep working, practicing, familiarise yourself with the medium, again and again, listen to good music, opera, a podcast or audiobook. Indulge in the process. Oil painting is a joy

I found some superb watercolours from digital artist Craig Mullins which helped reinforce my interest in traditional mediums. Studying from life with watercolours has been a joy. This is one I painted recently, trying to capture the whole scene, even loosely

oil painting, a man doing a pull-up, I was interested in observing the tension and strength of the upper torso. Painting athleticism is something I’d like to revisit!
